If a slave was good at something you probably wanted more slaves like that. That was also the only way the south could have stayed competitive with the north: slaves working in factories. It's interesting to read Frederick Douglass because he tells you what it was like in Maryland, where the slaves worked in shipyards. Up there he could live in a legit apartment, almost like his own house. He just had to go to the shipyard and work like a regular shipyard worker. He never says it but that was a much better way of doing slavery than making people pick cotton. The cotton thing was always destined to fail because the work itself was so shitty even slaves were like "fuck this." |
