I'm an idiot, is the placental sampling the same thing as an amnio, or is it more or less conclusive? We were in the elevated risk group (Something like 50% chance of trisomy 18) with our firstborn after the initial genetic screening/blood test. Son turned out fine in the end, but we would have absolutely terminated the pregnancy if it was confirmed trisomy 18. I have a friend whose wife carried to term with a trisomy 18 stillborn and it was a very traumatic experience for the both of them.

If you have done an amniocentesis that has confirmed trisomy and the ultrasound has given consistent results (kid not developing on schedule, NT through the roof, etc. - there should be a ton of issues on the ultrasound) then there is not much more you can do. The longer you wait, the harder the procedure will be on your wife physically - the baby's bones will start to harden soon, and then it becomes a more invasive procedure.

There is a big chance the baby won't make it to term anyway - even if it does make it to term, your talking about a very short life of agony for the baby. My thought process was that I would not hesitate to put my dog to sleep if she was terminal and suffering; I should do the same for my child.

One thing you could possibly consider: talk to your doctor about the possibility of carrying to term for the sake of organ donation to other babies. This would give you a reason to carry to term, so if by some chance the tests were wrong or your child's condition was not as severe as they thought, then you can deal with that. If your child's condition is as bad as they think, you could at least know that your child's life was able to save many others.

The defect might make that unviable since it's a genetic one, but it's worth an ask.
