To me it always seemed like he had these delusions of becoming a journalist because he was convinced he was interesting and he imagined an endless, global jet-setting lifestyle that he had a good shot at establishing since he wasn't really dependent on earning money from it. but the economic substance of such a partnership would be a sham if he weren't working. in most law partnerships, the actual capital contribution a partner makes to obtain his stake is de minimis compared to the ongoing contribution he has to make with his labor. if rsf obtained his partnership stake on terms that de facto assume he's contributing like a regular partner, when he's not (paying a far below market rate for his stake), economically that's an arbitrage of estate tax laws and it seems to me--a non-expert in these things--scammy. |
