But if he really, really felt he was a disappointment to his father, he seems like the type to push himself and buckle down, live with some discipline, distinguish himself to some extent.
To me it always seemed like he had these delusions of becoming a journalist because he was convinced he was interesting and he imagined an endless, global jet-setting lifestyle that he had a good shot at establishing since he wasn't really dependent on earning money from it. It's the kind of unrealistic career that highly entitled but underachieving college kids imagine for themselves. |

But you gotta step back and think about what your financial circumstances mean to you and how to convey that perspective to others.
It's fine that you are partner at your dad's firm for whatever reasons, but I don't think you believe that you contribute enough to the practice of law at the firm to explain that.
So when faced with that reality (and the trolls will focus on it as they do in this thread) you can make the choice to say "my situation is what it is, i am fortunate in a lot of ways and I wont apologize for that, so deal with it and stop being a hater."
But instead you use the partnership status as a bragging point in arguments, rather than humbly accepting your good fortune. What is there to brag about? |

Do you believe that your status as an equity partner (I assume) is justified based on the amount of work you do, your work schedule and the quality of your legal practice?
And if not, then why keep on trying to justify or explain it. I am not saying you do nothing at all - but are you taking depositions, writing briefs that are submitted to the court, first or second chairing trials?
Your position is either because of your quality and experience as a lawyer, or because of your dad. You can decide for yourself which it is, but if the latter is true, that's nothing to be ashamed of (that's life) but it also should not be a point of pride. |

but the economic substance of such a partnership would be a sham if he weren't working. in most law partnerships, the actual capital contribution a partner makes to obtain his stake is de minimis compared to the ongoing contribution he has to make with his labor. if rsf obtained his partnership stake on terms that de facto assume he's contributing like a regular partner, when he's not (paying a far below market rate for his stake), economically that's an arbitrage of estate tax laws and it seems to me--a non-expert in these things--scammy. |
