Slide could be molded out of plastic, it would just cause feeding issues. That's the only reason slides need to be made of metal - they need to have weight to them. Just manually cycle it.
It wouldn't need to be a handgun. Short barrel pump shottie would be better. You could pay off the airport janitor to hide it in the toilet. Airport janitors make like $17k so you'd pay him $700 and he'd hide 10 barrels for you.
I still doubt they'd pick it up either way. People fly with metal stuff sometimes. Like doorknobs, nail clippers, or Oscar Pistorious' blades.

If people really wanted to hijack a plane, it could probably be done relatively easily, especially considering they'd be willing to die trying.
Even easier if you just plan to take the place down.
Thus, we should really focus on keeping those who would like to do this out of the country in the first place, and assimilating all who do come.
