i would envision that dentists are some of the scummiest "doctors" out there since many people view this as an elective process. they're primary source of income is probably upselling procedures to to the people who come in regularly for cleanings and absolutely capitalizing on anyone who is coming in for some sort of dental emergency (like lost a crown or even a filling)

you assume wrongly that all dentists are scummy back alley "cosmetic dentistry" filling hawkers and ignore the great portion of dentists that hold true to their code as Knights of the Tooth

maybe it takes some shopping around but eventually you will find one who lays out his markup plainly and without trickery on the office's bills and this will change your opinion of the humble dentist very quickly

endodontists however are definitely of the sorts to grift and wheedle their patients should they come in for an emergency root canal or shattered bicuspid. i have yet to meet a honest endodontist in my many decades of going to the dentist

its an assumption but i doubt its wrong. even you concede you have to shop around to avoid it. I actually had 180 dentist who just retired and I kept him for 20 years even though I moved far far away because i went to some other quack who was a dick and definitely was trying to upsell me

as a kid i assumed all experts were actually experts not snakecharmers. that illusion is far gone. i dont trust any of these people anymore after seeing lawyers in action

dentists actually do Tooth Engineering and have more mechanical expertise than many doctors tbh. if you look at the actual work involved in a root canal or tooth reconstruction you start to wonder why they get paid less and have less prestige than many other medical specialties

a good dentist is like a good barber and very hard to replace once they're gone

i know some good honest ones, and they're rich af, work or worked great hours, but are still miserable with their career choice and grass is greener, wish they had done something else. feels empty to them, nobody is happy to go to the dentist, sometimes they get patients who are in pain and blame the doctor for either their bad health or the procedure needed.

the medical practice in general is extremely thankless and now generally underpaid due to insurance company and practice corporations squeezing the people who actually do the important work in the field

dentists seem to get it especially bad as insurance companies seem extremely stingy about matters of the jaw

aren't they forced to engage in fraud to be truly profitable?

unnecessary X-rays, unnecessary wisdom tooth removals, etc.?

I don't know why that's necessary when there's no shortage of people with legitimate tooth problems. I've also never seen a dentist upcharge for an x-ray

they still make great money even without tricks, but i mean yes, you're right of course that the margins get fatter if you do all the dirty monetization tricks, which is why PE is rolling up all the dental practices. i'm not an anti-PE guy, but in medicine and certain industries, it doesn't feel right to me.

They are some of the best people I know. We had one who was a close family friend, and he treated everyone in my family for free. He ran his own clinic with no support staff and had Rush Limbaugh on blast through the loudspeaker whenever he was in the office.

I've since come to know a very good Korean-American dentist who is super geeky about everything. We talk about materials science and lasers and shit when I see him. He's also funny as fuck. Like an uber-confident nyuug who makes a killing doing work he enjoys.
