I'm totally sick of BIGLAW and want to quit.

I'm thinking of doing a low-cost LLM abroad just to get the hell out of BIGLAW and have something else to do.

It's an LLM is something completely useless and I seriously doubt it will help me get a job.

Do it or not? I don't know what else I can do. I thought about an MBA abroad but it costs a ton, at least $60k for decent schools abroad.

It's under 10k for a year. It's only a year program. I don't want to say the specific country but it's in Asia or Middle East.

The school is actually respected in its country but no one in America would know it.

I want to live and work abroad eventually so it may help for that but I don't know.

I want to do something though that may lead to a job. This LLM is BS but at least there is a chance I could pull a job from it.

Language school is just horseshit unless you learn a language that is needed like Arabic or something.

i read on JDU the other day that people who know Arabic on a 3/3 listening/reading levels (according to some government test that goes up to level 5) get paid six figures in the private sector and like 75k working for the gov. really made me feel dumb. i should be out there learning Urdu/Arabic.

well the good thing is that you don't have to speak or write it for the government test or to get the jobs as a translator. you just need to learn to listen to it and read it. still pretty challenging, but the alphabet wouldn't be as bad as Chinese or Japanese, and you wouldn't actually have to make the impossible sounds.

I speak Arabic, do you think that can potentially cancel out the shitiness of attending a T2 law school?

Perhaps. If you want to do Islamic finance or corporate work in the Middle East you may be able to pull a law firm job in Dubai.

But generally I think speakin Arabic would help more for non-law jobs, like with the FBI, CIA, etc.

What would I do in law school to prepare for that? Anything specific to study or just do whatever classes I want?

I'm not in corporate but I imagine you should take as many corporate and finance classes as possible. I've heard some schools even have Islamic law or Islamic finance classes. You should try to get an unpaid intereship after your first year in Dubai with a law firm there, evne a non-US law firm.

YOu may also want to look into energy stuff, like lots of Texas firms have big energy practices and their Dubai offices do that a lot.

I know someone who did 2 LLM's, with one being abroad. The point of this... I'm not sure, but he wants to go into academia.

Re. MBA: I know someone who went to Cambridge for a Masters of Business (I think it's an M.Phil in Business?) Did his J.D. at a T14 law school... now in ibanking. Decided he's much more of a 'businessman' as he says, than a lawyer. He seems to be enjoying it, although stressed out. Maybe a change of career is good for you? Why would you want to pursue an MBA?

I think I would like B-school. I like going to happy hours and "networking" and meeting people. I am not good at spending 12 hours a day isolated in my law office working on mundane bullshit.

I would do b-school if it was affordable, but there is no way I would do it and pay 100k or whatever. I would rather do a cheap LLM abroad and try to leverage that into a management position. My law practice area is somewhat related to some managemnet areas so perhaps I could wing my way in. Whatever.
