So I basically have the same problem as this guy, in that someone google bombed me by posting my full name, a couple of old dating profiles, and literally anything about me he could find to entice strangers on AutoAdmit into calling me fat and ugly or whatever.
Being a girl on the internet, I'm no stranger to this kind of rhetoric. The thing is, though, that I'm not even in law school. I'd never even heard of this site before. From what I can tell, I happened to comment on a blog (that I don't even follow that closely), and there's this guy who hates the blogger so much that he targets literally anyone even remotely connected to her. So now when you google my name, you get some very awful keywords in the top searches.
I used whois to get the administrator's e-mail address and shot him a line, but considering the libel lawsuits Autoadmit has gone through in the past, I suspect that he's not going to do anything. Reputation.com is WAY too expensive for me, so they won't do anything, either. I don't even have an edu email anymore so I can't sign up for an account and post back (which probably wouldn't be a good idea anyway).
Do I have any other recourse? It hasn't affected my career that much yet but I'm worried about family members, loved ones, and potential romantic partners getting the wrong idea about me. The idea that I was a target of such irrational hatred because I liked a Tumblr post or something (in truth I don't even know WHAT specifically I did to make myself known to this creep) squicks me out.

Can I have your name so I can perform a few extra searches? You know, for investigative purposes.

It's just so I can help you here, my uncle is a system admin at Google and may have the ability to alter and omit specific search results.

Ok I'm sorry. I just really wanted to search your name and see that "victoria mcnally herpes skank" result. I'm a bad person.

Yeah, thought so. Despite the seemingly careless nature of my particular problem, this ain't my first time on the internet. Nice try.

It links to a thread on a cesspool of a message board, Autoadmit, where someone accuses me of committing a crime. I didn't, there's absolutely no evidence that I did other than his hearsay, and the person involved was identified and sued.
The last company I worked with wanted me to provide documentation to establish that I wasn't this person. Pretty bad process-- having to refute false claims on a stupid message board.
How likely is this to come up in general? If it's just 1 job I lost, I don't really care. I'm afraid it might be a factor in more interviews.

Autoadmit is pretty awful. Never understood the desire of young lawyers to smear each other and ruin others' reputations. Is law school really that bad?
If someone asks you about Google dirt, he's testing to see how you react to rude questions. Probably sizing you up for some sort of client-facing role. The correct answer is, "I don't know that person. Tell me what you found." You need to get the interviewer's sense of the story so you know what misconceptions to shoot down. It's a game, so never give up information too early.
When you're asked about embarrassing things in your personal or professional past, you actually hold the cards because there is something you can say to remain hireable. If those things are disqualifying, you won't be asked about them at all. They'll just turn you down.
Investment banking and "biglaw" tend to be very image-obsessed and Google dirt can hurt you. These professions are also full of douchebags. The industries that have the least ethical people place the highest emphasis on seeming professional and ethical. In technology, no one cares about that shit because being ethical and good at what you do actually matter.

I'm actually familiar with Autoadmit. It's a more educated 4chan. It's a surprisingly high-ranking message board and it has a lot of idiots who actively try to ruin peoples' reputations. A couple of scumbags got sued for that: "Google-bombing" female classmates and making it difficult for them to get law jobs.
This is great advice, but those things can be hard to bury.
Also, during a job search is a bad time to start networking or creating a web presence, because job searching has so many ups and downs and it's hard to present oneself in a professional (for lack of a better word) way when there's that much volatility going on. Those are things that should be done at all times, instead of when desperately needed only.
The general rule of any profession is that you need to allot 10 hours per week, at a minimum, to networking and skill-building. If your job makes such demands on your time that you can't do that, get another one because if you lose the one you have... the outer darkness.
