the law isn't "last to react", the law doesn't have to react because it has a moat. lawyers are the equivalent of the priest class in 2025. it's completely unnecessary which is why it's immune to shit like being automated away. you might as well say romans wasted a bunch of money on augurs. ok? yeah, they serve no purpose, but they make the rules, and the rules they make enshrine their existence.

oh, i lived through it.

but that proves what i'm saying -- it took a blank swan event and a real chance of the collapse of our whole system for biglaw to downsize. getting "lathamed" is still a term we use here yet companies downsizing and revoking offers is common in every other industry.

obviously lawyers aren't bulletproof. augurs don't exist anymore either. i'm just saying that efficiency, technology, the business cycle, etc. don't matter as much because 99% of lawyering is fraud and lies that serves no purpose except that it's mandated.

edit: actually trump revoking fed lawyer offers is a good modern example. the only thing that can eliminate the need for lawyers is the rulemaker deciding "we don't need lawyers." usually that's other lawyers, which is why it doesn't happen.

you're vastly underestimating the tolerance for the current legal system in the event we have a prolonged downturn. 2008 was the only time in our lifetimes we've seen real unemployment and it wasn't really that bad historically speaking. in the 70s-early 80s it lasted over a whole damn decade and that was back when our entire economy wasn't yet built almost entirely on reserve currency ZIRP shenanigans--if we have to transition out of this system there is no longer fake money to pay for tolerating fake legalism

incidentally this is also probably the best case scenario for the country long term since it's the only one in which there is a serious (ie not just elon wearing a dogecoin hoodie) push for deregulation

no i'm not, i'm saying that that type of severe prolonged pain is the only thing that could change it. so the law isn't "slow to react" right now, it doesn't have to react. i'm copping to it being almost all completely fake legalism and akin to roman augury. if there is systemic change i would not be surprised if our over-reliance on lawyers got gutted. but in that case *everyone* is gonna be fucked in the interim.

It's pretty ghastly from the hiring side too, the minute you put out a job ad you get 5,000 resumes most of them irrelevant spam. It's easy to criticize HR for using software to try and screen out the shit, but there's a reason why they do that.
