Companies, fearing legal liability, will only confirm dates of employment and title, because if they say the guy sucks it's a lawsuit (especially if the guy is a minority). Somebody who's a known quantity and can vouch for somebody is a lot more reliable source of information. And I've vetoed somebody myself when I used to work with them at a prior place and know they suck. I don't like this networking bullshit either, but shitlibs did this. What else are you supposed to do when half of the applicant pool puts down their brother, cousin or whoever as their boss at Acme Corp. and they all know exactly what questions the new company is allowed to ask? There are even companies that will take your background check for you and pretend to be whoever you ask them to be. How the fuck is this at all meritocratic at this point?
