They replaced authority with accommodation, replaced structure with vibes, replaced the hard edges of hierarchy with rounded purple corners and party games where nobody truly loses. They thought this was kindness. They thought this was progress. They did not see the erosion taking place in real time. GameCube itself embodied that erosion. It arrived after the N64 had already defined the template and instead of surpassing it, it curated it, miniaturized it, softened it. Wave Race without revelation. Mario Kart without urgency. Sunshine wandering inside Mario 64’s shadow. Star Fox dissolving into something unrecognizable. A console built from echoes, sold as continuity, accepted as comfort. The console that asked nothing and therefore built nothing. Gen X believed shielding children from stakes would preserve them. What it preserved instead was drift. And drift always looks benign at the start. It looks like a cube on a shelf. It looks like parents choosing the friendly option. It looks like a house where nothing seems wrong.
One thing leads to another and no one is surprised when his son wants to suck dick and his daughter wants to have a dick. His son probably wants to suck his daughter’s dick imo. Btw if there’s one thing that Yamauchi-San can take pride in posthumously it’s that he brought the west to its knees, figuratively and literally.
