It's well documented that girls tend to learn better and concentrate better when the thermostat is set at 71-72 degrees, while boys tend feel more comfortable at 68-69 degrees.
So I look at these kids, and it turns out to be true. 7 of the girls like it warmer, while 3 of them like it cooler. 6 of the boys like it cooler, while 4 like it warmer.
Now, you might consider these girls who like it cooler to be less "girly" than the others, and the boys who like it warmer to be going against the grain and be less masculine than the others. Fair enough right?
Okay, so next: I assign an art project. And according to studies, little girls and little boys approach this differently. Girls like hues - pastels, aquas, rich maroonish reds, purples. Boys like basic colors - blacks, greys, firetruck red, green, blue, orange. Girls show abstraction through relationships - how the different things in their picture relate to one another. Boys like to focus on single objects - "project" their identity on singular, physical objects.
So I check out what the kids drew, and the hypothesis looks right. Six of my girls drew pictures with feminine qualities, and four were more on the boyish side. Seven of my boys had boyish pictures, and 3 of them went with relationships and hues in their pictures.
Okay, so I have a few girls on the masculine side, and a few boys on the girlish side, right?
No. Because the kids who went against the grain in each of the situations are DIFFERENT KIDS. It's not like there are just a few kids who are against the grain - if you take the endless differences between the sexes and apply them to one person, a person will go with their gender on slightly more than half of those characteristics, but not all. But if they are boxed into always acting like their gender, there will ALWAYS be situations in which that person isn't reaching his/her potential or is being alienated.
This is why we don't group all the girls together and teach them girl things and then group all the boys together and teach them boy things. There will ALWAYS be someone alienated, and it will always be different people. The only credited approach for these people to feel at home and accepted and reach their potential is always take the pluralistic approach, and too allow them to do whatever the fuck they want without dropping labels on it. You have all these rules for how women should act and how men should act, and I just can't imagine walking through life that way without inevitable being incredibly stifled or unnatural - even if you're the girliest girl on earth, there will be part of you that aren't traditionally or commonly female. But if you stay in those boxes you'll never discover them. |

6. not afraid to present and speak in front of many people, ..again confidence
7. can drive a stick

10. has principles and stands by them

I also might add 6 (public speaking). Maybe that's a sentimental one since so many women I know are bad at public speaking. It's so important for many careers that are female-dominated (like teaching), and I think it's crucial for a woman to be comfortable expressing herself and her opinions in front of others (I also think it's important to know when to open your mouth and when to keep it shut, but that's a different point).
So many women in law school would apologize before they said something, as if they were sorry for expressing an opinion or even speaking. A professor called me out on this and that's why it stuck with me. |

You're probably right that while 6 is important for women that it's more important for men, since women have much more of an option to opt out of the workforce. I don't really know how positive a message that sends though - I figured I'd be working for 2 years and then would be married to my LS boyfriend so I figured I wouldn't really need to care about my job. Now look at me 6 years later, doing OK in biglaw and no ring.
So women might need to cultivate those career skills if they don't get a ring when they expect, or if their husband gets laid off, or if they fall in love with someone who doesn't earn that much, or if they get divorced and have to get back to work.
Back to your point about risk taking, if I took the risk of not caring so much about my career skills I could be in a much worse position right now, financially speaking, as a single female. I don't want my daughter putting career on the back burner and assuming that she'll be marriage-track by 25 and wed by 27.

I feel like americans really have no clue about risks because life has been so awesome for the boomers and they brought that mentality into our generation..I mean just look at the shit people post on xoxo or what you hear on the news...it's like we all just 'expect' everything now without concerning the facts, risks, etc., but you're smart and you know what I'm talking about.
