Not necessarily in order:

UVA

Berkeley

UCLA

Michigan

Texas

Wisconsin

UNC

those are the only clear "top ten" ones. then there's probably 7 or 8 more schools that have an arg to the last 4-5 spots.

It's got a really formulaic acceptance standard, so you basically know if you get in or not. If you go to high school in Illinois, even dumbfuck school college advisers can pretend with pretty decent certainty whether you'll get in or not.

You don't apply unless you got a shot of getting in, and they don't reject anyone above their standard. They don't give a shit about playing the piano or being president of the HIV Acceptance Club.

Wisconsin is just as bad, but has worse ACT 25/75 range.

Illinois's ACT range is 26 / 31 and Michigan's is 28 / 32. Not a huge difference.

And the Engineering and Business colleges are a lot more competitive. The real difference between Michigan and schools like UW and UIUC is that the later will let in some kinda shitty people into their TTT shit like Agriculture or weird shit like hotel management.

Florida is by far the best public university in the state. Academically it's way ahead of everywhere except miami, which is private and 30k more a year. Florida does great in just about every collegiate sport. Party scene is always top 5. Florida is also a relevant state and the 4th largest in the country.

Just about all of this applies to Georgia as well, except the state of Georgia is shittier and less important than Florida.

their 75th percentile math/reading score is 1420. that's higher than the 75th percentile score at florida, texas, wisconsin and a bunch of other good publics. i know miami is private and smaller than all of those places but i really thought it was a school for very dumb kids. apparently, it's not.

UT is routinely identified as one of the top public undergrad institutions in the world, homey. It would be even moar preftigious if it weren't required by law to admit shitloads of mouthbreathers who eked out top 10% ranking at shittown podunk high.

For the same raeson it's LS will never be a true top LS no matter how stellar it does - it's required by law to fill like 75% of its class or something with Texas residents. There aren't enough good applicants residing in TX to make it a contendah that can't get into a far better LS. You get some "TX first yeehaw" type smart bros and a ton of middling students.

yes, there's this weird distribution of talent. Tons of top kids at good upper middle class white high schools go there instead of going for the traditional top20 schools, but you've also got a TON of tards from ghetto/rural schools.

you serious about UT law? That's insane

For this reason the credited strategy for reasonably smart non-Texan kids is to get in to UT, get in-state tuition and then pwn, pwn, pwn while barely doing any work at all in UG and hooking up with an inordinate number of hot girls you really have no business getting with outside of this context. UT law less so, because you will have job placement limitations if you can't get top quarter, and if you're not trying to stay in Texas for five years after LS you pretty much have to make law review to be assured of a good job elsewhere.

no, europeans take a much more vocational approach to education. they push people towards vocational education earlier so those who end up at universities are actually capable of getting through instead of barely getting a watered-down degree.

I believe his point was that Europeans push people into vocational training INSTEAD of college, while in the US everyone goes to college, where many study vocations. It's not so much that the US chooses to prioritize vocational training in college; it's more there's no other real avenue - our entire society just flat out looks down on non-college vocational training.

it's not just based on engineering. it's based on faculty reputation, number of publications, quality of publications, research quality, money spent on research, etc. so schools that do lots of high-dollar, high-impact research get big boosts. and most research that fits that mold is in STEM, medical, and some social science research.

you could argue that uva history is better than michigan or maybe some other departments are better but as an overall university, how is uva better? michigan is leaps and bounds better in the sciences, actually teaches engineering and is better in most fields of the social sciences. and nearly every professional school is better. law is the only one where they're similar.

If we're talking the entire university, then Michigan, Wisconsin, Cal, UCLA, Texas /end thread (not in that order), because the major research functions and overall quality of programs beat out every other public - UNC, UVA, W&M, other UCs, etc have strong programs or strong UG bodies, but overall schools cannot compete with those 5

UVA's student body > Michigan for undergrad, harder to get into, and just fucking more prestigious

This isn't 1991 anymore.

and michigan has double the number of undergrads.

Michigan admits a shit ton of moronic in-state students

Plus, Michigan is more ACT-centric so I'm not sure SAT matters

I visited friends at ASU and University of Colorado when I was in college. After that I had dreams of dropping out of my ivy and going to one of those schools. The chicks were way hotter. The pot was better. The parties were better. The bars were better. No idea if ASU and CU grads get jobs.

And just think, excluding maybe 1/3 of the HUG class -- and since you didn't say HYP, probably a lower ivy, so much less -- the ASU or Colorado grad, especially with ivy like intellect (thus, 3.9+ and honors college) probably gets the exact. same. job.

1. Berkeley

UIUC has some elite departments, especially in the sciences and engineering. It's at worst on the same level as Texas.

Wisconsin has all the strengths of UIUC but stronger programs in other areas and better undergraduate selectivity (50% which is pretty good for a public).

undergraduate selectivity is how asian gunner dorks on college confidential judge schools -- it's not the ultimate measure of a school

even then, undergraduate selectivity is especially stupid when comparing public schools because they have a different mandate than some small private institution

No, it's not the ultimate measure, but when some rancid B1G troll is trying to say that a public school that accepts more than 2/3 of its applicants is more prestigious than a public school that accepts less than 1/3, I say said rancid B1G troll is full of shit.

Well, this is a board about prestige. There might not be the same prestige in a public U, but it's an interesting discussion, considering the run away costs of elite private schools and the general slam on goin to "the state U". Some flagships are worth attending and this board fleshes them out.
