The coach recognized me because I went from being a pretty shitty player to being a pretty solid player in the course of a season -- in addition to running sprints, I went to the batting cage a lot, practiced with friends, etc. I probably went from bottom 3 to top 3 players on the team in a year. It was one of the best times in my life. Unfortunately a year or two later was when we had to try out for "babe ruth league" or w/e and suddenly I was way outclassed, and I guess I didn't want it badly enough to put in the kind of work I needed to make it to the next level.
