Poor UGPA apparently (and took a long time to finish), spotty work history. Only prepped for LSAT for a couple of weeks. Didn't sound too bright either - had trouble understanding what a GRADING CURVE was when I explained it to him.

Man, it was hard to balance honesty and not being a complete downer. Obviously I told him to retake and reapply and suggested going for regional schools if he really wants to do it. But fuck man, sad case. The only consolation is that he'll probably never get his shit together enough to actually go.

Me: "The classes are graded on a curve"

Him: "What does that mean?"

Me: "It means you can show you know the material and still get a B. It means in a 100 person class only a set number of people will get A's no matter what - probably 10-15 but depends on the school."

Him: Why is that?

Me: ...

sounds more like not understanding the purpose of a grade curve.

went to a top undergrad and never had a curved class or really knew the mechanics aside from the fact that you hate the guy who "broke the curve."

why was he asking you for advice? I teach LSAT classes and it's tough not to be a downer for the people in the <160 crowd, especially when they ask me about my law school plans and I tell them I'm leaning towards not going since I couldn't get a scholarship at a top 10.

I'm not sure - family friend referred him to me. I also used to teach LSAT so maybe that's why. Maybe he just wanted to talk to someone in law school. No idea. Dude seemed a little lost.

You should have been frank with him about the realities of the legal market. Or spin it like, "well, if I could do it over again, I probably would have done X, Y, or Z instead."

I told him that the job market was very bad and also that hiring was extremely rankings and prestige driven so not going to a good school could hamper his chances. It's hard to walk the line between being frank and just coming off as a cranky, bitter douche.
