Trump is going to pack the Fed with governors who will drive down short term interest rates and thus online savings account rates with them. But the bond vigilantes will likely revolt by driving up longer term bond rates, and I want to have an account with the Treasury Department ready to go when that happens.

You can just buy bonds on a brokerage like Fidelity. Way less hassle. The Treasury Direct website is garbage.

Well, if the whole point is security - which it is - then maybe that's a good thing if you are planning on putting a big chunk of your life savings into it.

Good info about it in this thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bogleheads/comments/1arw4a2/learning_about_treasury_direct/

I setup my account, they didn't require me to have the password mailed- they obviously didn't smell curry like with TT. They are offering 10 year notes paying 4.25%. May be something worth considering if Trump drives down short term rates and longer term rates go up as a result.

Don't see any reason to do it right now, though. I can get a 2-5 year CD from Goldman Sachs (already have an account with them) paying 3.9%, and 4.25% isn't a big enough premium for the hassle and unknown of buying bonds. But it may be in the future. Bonds are exempt from state and local income taxes which is nice.

You can make much higher yield with qqqi and don't even pay tax on it until you sell. Bonds are treated as ordinary income.

Very unlikely it will actually go down long term, much more likely the value will be higher. While with bonds u just have current value and yield less than real inflation and that yield is taxed at 40%. Might as well just buy bitcoin or qqq and never sell.

Actually, the guy who recommended Fidelity was correct, based on this comment:

The major practical downside is that when you buy from TreasuryDirect, you cannot exit your position early by re-auctioning on a secondary market like you can with Fidelity or Schwab.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bogleheads/comments/1arw4a2/learning_about_treasury_direct/

Fuck that shit. I'll use Fidelity if I go this route.

why bonds over money market funds?

MMF currently pay same interest but more liquid.

Principal does not go up in a MMF as yields drop. You just earn less interest.

good point

but for the next year or so, probably both will pay out roughly the same. waiting for a discount on stocks before buying in. missed the last drop thinking I had a bit more time to buy in.
