Is it some open source message board software than is available to anyone? Customized heavily? Completely built from scratch?

I'm not a CS super-freak.
ML and Lisp are functional languages, whereas the most common languages (C++, Java) are imperative. Functional languages tend to be more abstract, which makes them more powerful but accessible to fewer people.

The formatting is based on the old PR site, which ran Allaire Forums. I'm not even sure you could run AF on the newer versions of CF that most hosting providers offer or even find the software. Allaire opensourced it years ago, so maybe there's a copy floating around somewhere.
Boondocks and rachmiel just looked at the CFML and translated it (poorly) to PHP.

No question. I'm just referring to replies showing up under the wrong posts.
Edit: And that may have been a problem in the CF version. Most CF apps were sloppy.

you can edit phpbb3.
i turned it into a e-trading marketplace, you cant even tell that it is built on a forum software. just edit the templates, take off all the graphics and edit the .css file. and voila.

oh, that cant be done, unless you programme in php. it would be really hard.
but how badly do you need the tree structure thing? if you edit the phpbb and take off all the graphics and bulky stuff. it would still be nice.

There's not that much to the code of this board. The core message display stuff was like a weekend job.
If folks are interested, though, I can tell you about how it works. It's pretty easy, really. I think you'd get more out of it writing your own than just playing around with our (old and relatively messy) code.

1) It's not pretty. For various reasons. One of them is that it's just old and was coded somewhat sloppily from the start.
2) For the elements of the site that are meant to cut down on spamminess, giving folks the precise details on what we do and how we do it just makes it that much easier to do bad things.
3) Laziness.

The original PR forum was made using Allaire, a forum used with Macromedia ColdFusion.
At some point, Rachmiel and Boondock created a new forum from scratch based very closely off that, this is the result of their work.
