I've got a similar situation. I'm using just over half of my bids on my home market and have remaining bids I want to use. So I'm going with NY/DC as my backup, but problem is that they are major markets and I'm thinking my bids will be wasted since they are for popular/top firms. Haven't talked to OCS yet. |

Actually, the two guys I know who got the best grades both complained/bragged about how much work they were doing. One even said that he felt anxious and unhappy if he had any free time. That's not to say I really anticipated their success beforehand, since I tend to doubt the marginal efficacy of grinding. However, even if there's no strong causation effect of that level of diligence, I probably should have realized there'd be a correlation. |

I didn't determine the necessity of high bidding by that (if anything, high GPA should scare some people away), but there's a big overlap between selectivity and expected bid competition (mostly to do with Vault rankings/prestige, layoffs, firm stability, number of offices and class size), so that's how it worked out. |

I didn't really notice any difference between who NALP said was coming and who appeared on Symplicity. The only ones that I really noticed were ones that never really could get Michigan students in a good economy. And even those are doing resume collection.
From what my counselor told me, in a normal economy 75% of students got their summer job through OCI. This year, they are conservatively expecting 50% to get them through OCI. That means that the other 25% are just going to have to hustle. The jobs are out there. They just won't necessarily be coming to you. For instance, I started my list of NON-OCI NYC firms and it's at 60 already, and I haven't even gone through Martindale. There are tons of firms out there. People are just going to have to get over not working at a v-100. How much longer is everybody really going to be chasing prestige? That shit is old. |

dude i just got a look at the symplicity list of firms interviewing at michigan and our OCI is WEAK. i almost shit my pants. most firms there are interviewing for different offices separately and many over two days. Dykema, Miller, Varnum to name a few. even Drinker Grand Rapids gets its own interview team. compare that to our OCI list.

i wrote a scathing email to them today, telling them they should be notifying students immediately which firms/offices were no longer attending. they are screwing over students like me who are summering in their target markets and may actually have a chance to line up interviews before going back. their response was they were compiling a list and were going to email students over the new few days. also gave me BS about how it could be a waste of time to contact those firms since them pulling out indicates they're probably not having an SA class or are delaying hiring (not true for firms only pulling out certain offices. truth is no one wants to come out here). |
