what the hell is wrong with this town? restaurants, be they casual eateries or expensive places, serve food that has no distinctive identity or culinary merit. it's like they're all phoning it in. this town is seemingly stuck in the 80s notion that "french food" is somehow the end-all, be-all of classy dining.
and why doesn't c'ville or most of virginia for that matter have proper indigenous or southern cuisine? go to NC, SC, or GA and you can walk into any hole-in-the-wall family run place in any bumfuck town and have a kick-ass meal. here everything is bland, watered down, boring, or banal. it's like ithaca, ny.
thanks a bunch, charlottesville. looks like i'll have to eat fucking CHIPOTLE for dinner.

Compared to any small city in the South, Charlottesville has tremendously good food -- several passable high end options, some decent ethnic food (almost non-existent in small cities in the South), and cheap-but-good college-kid options etc.
Really compared even to a college town in the South it is good, and probably compares favorably to a medium sized city in the South except for local/Southern food.
But compared to major cities in the South or anywhere -- no it's not even close. There is blatant Charlottesville trolling among rednecks and plebes that think C-ville has the best food on earth. It's just very good compared to other similar-sized cities in the region.

OP here - I've found some pretty good places in C'vlle since. Eppie's is definitely credited - have no idea how they make chicken & dumplings and collard greens (vegan!) still taste that good, and the sweet tea is on point. Tucker Yoder is doing excellent farm-to-table stuff at the Clifton Inn, and that new BBQ Exchange place in Gordonsville actually does 'Q that isn't embarrassing like throughout the rest of Virginia. I realize now that Virginia is too far north to have a lot of the inexpensive Southern staples that you find in states to its south (meat 'n three lunch places with a spread of fresh veggies - no one in va knows what the fuck that is).
Still, the focus on french food for most "fine dining" options is really quite a throwback.
