you'll get paid in the sweat and broken dreams of all the associates and lathamed associated that you and your fellow avaricious skinflint partners so callously destroy.

"working hard" is different from working at a v10 firm.

only if that 60-70 hours is concentrated during normal working hours, and is somewhat predictable.

I'd guess it is more than that at V10 firms, which tend to have both very high PPP and relatively compressed lockstep partner compensation.

Try closer to a 750 to a million (assuming you amortize the cost of the units over the entire partnership term).

How much do you need to cough up for the buy in? Why even consider that capital contribution a "cost" - you get it back when you retire/leave.

I believe the typical scheme is you buy in at the previous year's unit value (actually the profit-per-unit number, which is not really a true valuation).

And yes, you're right that a departing partner will have his units redeemed out by the firm (though I don't know if this is typically valued at the then-current profit-per-unit number or just the amount of the partner's capital account at that time, which would likely be far less). I included that caveat to avoid any smartass telling me that I was wrong because the first year partner has to put almost as much in for his initial units as he gets out the first year.

One thing I don't have a good handle on is how much of the firm's profits are actually distributed in a given year rather than held as capital reserves or investment into the next year.
