he lived way too long for an actual thug. a hardcore banger dies in street combat no later than 35 or so. living to age 60 is an absurd luxury that he was wrong to even attempt.

he was just too successful in his thuggery. i don't blame him for wanting to keep the Death Row racket alive. they had some real names on there even after dre and snoop started branching out. nobody really predicted the popular turn to ny/east coast in the late 90s and 00s and by all accounts it seemed like it was going to stay as a california thing indefinitely

regardless his career as a real banger was over when he got diced by MC hammer's crew of all people. some people say his "career" was over after the infamous bail hearing stroke out but it was done well before that

he only seemed to respond in force when a big name went after him and ignored eazy-e/heller, ice cube, hammer, and i think even that one crip guy who was part of WC

there were so many vids on Worldstar over the years of him getting slammed by random people in front of his bodyguards and staff that he became more of a joke than anything

2pac era suge went after anyone and everything that so much as looked at him wrong so i guess it's just another case of $hekel$ corrupting the real warrior soul of a man

he had periods where he drifted in and out of that weird like Fueled By Ramen production shop aesthetic sound

Encore era I think he was trying to emulate Timberlake's sound for more of a mass pop appeal (and sadly, it seemed to work iirc)

There were maybe 3-4 years in 00s pop music where the radio was just dead air

Gwen Stefani (highly underrated, at least as a musician and not as an artist, post no doubt) and that was about it. Nickelback 🤢

2003-2005 is IMO largely just dead air for pop music and same with rock

Room on fire was 02 or 03

Highly Evolved was the same either 02 or 03

I think those were great years for real Alt Rock but it was also when Billboard got into the field bigly and started trying to be the Authority on Life regarding what was and wasn't legible in the field

For pop I only remember JT and Stefani really. Maybe a couple of the Latin artists but ~05 was when you really started having the big push for nigger shit all over the air (and that push was relentless)

otoh you had the killers and franz ferdinand etc blowing up which was good (although towards the later end of the dead zone period i identified) and it's a pretty wild era when freaking modest mouse was able to get widespread name recognition

Hard to call the Strokes or the Vines indie tho. And what really was "indie" in that era, pre-Pitchfork's spotlight? Casablancas had a silver spoon in his mouth as far as industry connections went; I've never really considered the Strokes or on to be indie stuff. "Indie" as we think of it now wasn't really a thing until the OWS era and onward. I think I was first introduced to it as a marketable "genre" in 09 or 10 at a show featuring cage the elephant and against me type stuff

i respectfully disagree

if you were reading spin back then they were definitely constructing a concept of 'indie' similar to the 90s branding of 'alternative'

i was not but i believe you. this was just my experience with it. "indie" as a label for a genre only hit a fever pitch around the arcade fire/foster the people era ime. until then it was just "alt rock" or "garage rock"

the only spin i had was stuff bought second hand from the blur/oasis era and it was much more dance music focused than anything to do with what we'd later call american indie stuff i guess

it existed as its own subculture on college radio stations and among Losers. mainstream was oblivious to it so you're not entirely wrong.

devastating dick clock that man was a 7 year old. there's no mainstream for elementary schoolers

i started listening to kroq on the computer internet around then and got most of my information from that until i discovered the wide world of music reviews. local FM was kind of spotty here but there was a good muzak/classical station until 09 or so and also a good 80s/90s station that played a lot of post-punk type stuff (the DJ in the evenings had a hardon for stuff like Inspiral Carpets and Depeche Mode) but i think it's a latin station now. last time i tuned in it was reggaeton/bacchata type stuff

I would hazard a guess that that genre as it came to be had to be constructed as an alternative to "alt rock" which was mainly just a pool of fratty bro DMB/ska shit to give that OWS crowd an outlet for their fundamentally volkish frustrations

Rammstein - Reise, Reise

Sportfreunde Stiller - Burli

Wir Sind Helden - Die Reklamation

Radiohead - Hail to the Thief

Brand New - Deja Entendu

MCR - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge

Incubus - A Crow Left of the Murder

Kings of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood

Charlie Brown Jr - Imunidade Musical

I feel like I am missing a ton of shit but this was peak alt rock. There were a ton of talented bands getting financial support from the record labels. Rock was still very mainstream. There was still a lot of CD sales. It was a mini silver age. Maybe for Green Day fans it was a fallow period. St. Anger too pissed a lot of people off.

Thom Yorke's typical whininess really hit home with the vocal crescendos on Wolf at the Door

That whole album is filled with lightly dusted gems

For the record I also think In Rainbows was better than even OK Computer and Bodysnatchers off of that is probably my POTUS track by them

Love In Rainbows but I wouldn't say Bodysnatchers is the best.

Nude, Weird Fishes, House of Cards, Reckoner. Lot of tracks I would put ahead of Bodysnatchers. I feel like it was a guitar riff that never got built out all the way into a full song.

It's euphoric in the way that a lot of crunchy layered MIDI dweeb stuff can be, which is the genre Yorke would've found himself working in if he had started his music career 7-10 years later than he did. It's the most spiritually Radiohead song that doesn't actually sound like Radiohead

Reckoner and Weird Fishes are both very good too though

i think the popularization and mainstreaming of rap in general meant that the harder core stuff from the west coast just seemed increasingly outdated

i personally prefer west coast rap tho

it's more real

east coast has better lyricism but all the rawness and heart comes from that squelchy synth 70s derived ronnie hudson/george clinton west coast sound

Geto Boys have more raw "feel" in a single track than Bad Boy had in their whole discography imo

there is nothing "pansy" about outright threatening to murder your opposing counsel on a T5 EP imo
