MINUS FUCKING EIGHT on a paper: advice?

Date: July 13th, 2006 12:24 AM Author: useless international law enforcement agency center I'm going to Berlin in the fall and decided to take a German class over the summer. The grading system is out of 300, scaled as follows:
250-300: A 220-249: B 170-219: C sub-170: F (they don't give D's at my school)
The grade is computed from the following:
Homework (25) Midterm Quiz (75) Final exam (100) Paper (100)
I aced the homework, got a 58 on the quiz and a 91 on the test. This means that I had a 174 going into the paper, enough for a C. Since I was stupid and took the class pass/fail (I didn't realize how easy summer classes were at my school) I technically had no incentive to write the paper.
The professor is a fucking dickwad and absolutely anal about grammatical gender. He took off NINE fucking points per gender error, even on his tests which were too long and poorly written for it to even be expected that we'd get genders right. I only needed a C in this class, and so just to spite him, I made 12 errors on the final paper because he couldn't do anything about it! 174 + 0 = 174 which would still give me a C, which would be reported as a P. Or so I thought...
My paper, which was ten pages long and beautiful aside from the intentional errors, came back over the weekend with a -8 on it. I'm not kidding: a MINUS FUCKING EIGHT. That brings me to a 166, which is failing. I would have passed the class by not writing the paper at all and taking a zero!
And yes, I emailed this cocksucker and asked if he was going to fail me, and he said yes. I will now have a fucking F on my transcript for a 101-level language class taken IN THE SUMMER. Worse yet, I'm afraid the Berlin program will retroactively un-accept me.
Do you guys have any advice? Think I can sue this professor? |

it just seems ludicrous to me that you can get NEGATIVE points for HANDING in an assignment. and, from what you say, you didnt just hand in some slapdash piece of junk with your name on it written in feces; you actually turned in a suitable work. taking a submitted work and using it as grounds to give you NEGATIVE points seems completely foolish. by that reasoning, you could have turned in a paper with just your name on it -- with no mistakes, there would be no 'negative' points, just a big fat, pass-worthy 0.

Ummm... no. A number of people in this thread (myself included) agree with him, and I'm sure many others who haven't posted do too.
Also, it is humorous that you think I am pensive. While most people here seem to have a pathological hatred of him, I am not one of them. I think he is actually intelligent and informed. If this opinion is easier for you to digest by dismissing it as Walker-Thomas = pensive, feel free.

I'm sorry, but if you were not good enough at German to be in the A range of the class heading into the paper, I really doubt that there is anyway you could write a "perfect" paper for 10 pages. I've studied 3 languages to intermediate levels and never heard of such a requirement; its impossible to write anything beautiful (or even just interesting) for that long at that level without getting into a whole lot of vocab and grammar that you don't really know. Come on, this is a 101 level course, anyone at that level in a language is going to completely suck. A professor who really wanted to spite you could have torn your paper up for more than a few deliberate errors.
Plus, the whole academic honesty thing you mention later on is nonsense. There is no reason in the world the school would say you couldn't talk to other students about this situation. More creative than most flames, though, I guess. |

I didn't mean that I wrote fluent German, but . I called it "perfect" because there were no other marks than the gender corrections in the last paragraph. It would've been a 100 paper if not for those. That's what I mean by "perfect"; I don't mean fluent prose that a native speaker would find brilliant and senpivian.
Also, 174/200 (what I had before the paper) was A range since 250 out of the final 300 was an A. His exams and grading are notoriously difficult and 80% is considered a good score. |

"Zero" is just an arbitrary point on the grade continuum; how one truly wishes to represent not doing any work is a matter of opinion, and moreover bad work (in the real world) is often less than none at all. A negative score is saying that something is worth, say, 100 points, but then taking more than 100 points off of the total points used to calculate the final grade. Taking 108 pts off for a 100 pt assignment is negative grading, and is bullshit.
An automatic faulure of a class due to lifting another person's work is valid because they cannot be trusted. They have violated the honor code, and any class for which they have submitted plagiarized work is soiled beyond recovery.
These are two entirely different matters. The latter is punishment for not meeting higher ethical standards. The former is punishment by selectively tilting the scale in order to fuck a student over.
If it's 100 pts, the most you can take off is 100 pts. |

Professors' salaries at my college are not flat based on many factors including course enrollment. (This is to prevent them from becoming deadweight once they get tenure.) The chair just wants to extort more money out of me. However, the Berlin application requires an official transcript to be sent July 15th. So this "second chance" doesn't save me because I'll still get booted from the Berlin program. Fuck. |

This was intentional by design. I didn't hit 163 exactly, but close enough given that I've been fucking drunk all night and not posting regularly. I've hit several Internet cafes in Bklyn between drinks, just to see how close to 163 XO was.
I used the made-up word "senpivian" (pensivian) as synonymous with "brilliant" to describe prose. I posted under a community account (welterweight), which is an obvious sign of someone trying to flame the board. How did it take the board this long to find out? |
