the whole conception seems baffling. who actually wanted a 'race movie' in their sopranos nostalgia piece?

they released it in theaters to try to get Oscar/Globe noms but it was at the height of Omicron COVID plus it just sucked

I didn't see it because the idea of needing a Sopranos prequel is just retarded. I don't need any more information on why Tony is who he is.

What even was the black angle of this? I remember hearing it was filled with black bullshit, but I can't even fathom it.

When I read this I just imagine Tony smiling as Meadow describes black behavior and saying something like "I'm just sayin', it's weird how they started rioting as soon as we ended segregation" with a chuckle.

a series about Tony in his 20s would actually be cool if they could find someone good to play him (they can't). the black stuff was just that the whole movie took place during the Newark riots in the 1970s and it was just a guido romcom with sopranos references sprinkled in and set around niggers setting shit on fire

The casting was terrible too. Gandolfini’s son comes off as the kid of a rich actor, not an angry guido growing up in Newark. The guy who played Dickie and of course Ray Liotta were great but everyone else was bad. It didn’t even feel like a real movie, it felt cheaply made, more like a miniseries from the 80s or something.

It had its moments. It’s not the worst movie in the world but it’s so unnecessary and unsatisfying.

I watched for like 20 minutes before shutting it off. The pacing was all off especially in comparison to the Sopranos, which was a slow burn. The movie raced from scene to scene in a jarring way. It never lingered on a character or event in the way the Sopranos did, which gave the Sopranos much more emotional impact. I’m sure it sucked for many other reasons too but this pacing issue caused me to just shut it off because it didn’t feel right to me.

I love The Sopranos and I cannot remember anything that happened in this movie. If you asked me to describe the story I would have to say "I don't know. Something about the Newark riots. Don't know"
