A good chance, yes. Mainly because Kevin Durant will become an immediate stud in the NBA while Oden may take a few years.

sure they do. They need a durant, their stacked with Odens. Which would you go for?

On the flip side, Seattle has a durant in Lewis, they need an Oden.

They better work out a deal.

ORLY? Because I look here:

http://www.nba.com/blazers/roster/

...and this roster doesn't seem to have any 7 foot studs with superstar potential. All I see is Joel Przybilla and Luke Schenscher (without his posse). Durant at his max potential could be incredible, but you can get decent similar players in the league. If Oden maxes out, he's the next Tim Duncan.

Oden isn't anything like Tim Duncan. Thats a big IF doc.

"This league is moving away from being a big mans league."

Since 99 it's been the Duncan Spurs (x4), Shaq Lakers (x3) and Heat, and the Pistons.

I'm saying it isn't insane to suggest it's possible, that superstar centers are rare commoditiese, and that almost all the recent championship teams had one.

Ok, the last two were won as a result of great guard play, they just happened to have two former dominant big men.

Indeed Shaq's 3 championships were won because Kobe was there. Shaq did well with the Heat because he had Wade. Duncan would've had a very hard time winning without excellent guards: from Sean E to Tony P, he's always had legitimately good guards picking up a lot of the slack. It's been a guard's game for some time now. Will the new crop of big men change things? I doubt it.

you're right. it's probably just conincidence that the smaller run and gun teams fail every year, while the teams with big men always win. I'm not saying you could win with Duncan and scrubs, but I don't think you're giving him the credit he deserves either. Not to mention that big men make people want to come to a team.

Oden is not a dominant offensive big man though. He's not getting buckets left and right, and in the L everyone he'll face will damn near be his size. He'll be as good as Roy allows(Jack will be traded).

All you have to do is look at teams like Minnesota - who have had arguably one of the best big men in recent history for a while now, but haven't had any guards to complement him, and thus have pretty much sucked - and it'll all make sense. Obviously Duncan's a great PF (center) but his good guards substantially contributed to his greatness.

The same thing is going on with Amare and Steve Nash. Amare is clearly one of the top 5 big men in the game. But Nash gets the accolades, and deservedly so. Phoenix is a middle tier team without Nash. But are they a middle tier team without Amare? Of course not: Amare was hurt a lot during the last 2 years and Phoenix was still one of the best in the west.

Tony Parker was supposed to put up the numbers he did against the Cavs. He matched up with a corpse in 1-2 and a rook in 3-4. Duncan's old, but he's not Shaq just yet.

(and Shaq... I'll give you that one)
