When do you think they'll start calling for interviews? Before selected for an interview will the online application say that your application has been selected for further review? |

If you look at the page on the OARM website that provides deadlines for submitting supplemental information (transcripts, writing sample) for those who have been selected for interviews, the deadlines are generally Oct. 10-18. So I assume their goal is to have selected and notified interviewees before or around that time. |

Are you sure the intern applied for the AG Honors Program and not SLIP?
Can you at least tell me if you're EOIR/BOP or not? those divisions seem to hire the most Honors Attorneys and I imagine are not very competitive. |

I'm neither of those divisions. They do hire the most attorneys, but EOIR is fairly competitive, mostly because they hire for non-DC locations. |

There's no reason for the status not to change unless they decide you're ineligible; but I'm concerned because last year there was a big fuck-up at OARM and a lot of applications just basically got lost in the system. I'd hate for that to happen.
Most divisions only interview the people who put them first or second; a few (like civil rights and antitrust) only interview people who put them first.
I don't think non-DC locations are *more* competitive, but I think that a lot of applicants who have spouses, etc., tend to gravitate toward components with positions available that don't require them to move to DC. Even though EOIR hires a lot of people, it's still fairly competitive -- certainly not like Civil Rights or Criminal, though.
That a particular component has very few positions means nothing. Civil Rights gets far and away the most applicants and they are always among the components that hire the fewest people. I assume you applied either to an antitrust field office or a U.S. Attorneys Office. Those are extremely competitive, actually. |

I did apply to Antitrust. I ranked it second, with my first choice within Antitrust being a field office. This was probably pretty stupid, but I figured it doesn't matter anyway since I'd really only have a shot at my first choice. I did reference my interest in Antitrust in my essay, though. |

A disclaimer: while I work for the DOJ, I have no insight into the actual hiring process or how interviewees are selected (that is, I'm not involved in the process of deciding who gets interviewed in my component). All of the info I have posted in this thread is based entirely on personal experience and general information available to DOJ employees.
Edited to add that my intern just e-mailed to say she's been selected for an interview. As far as she knows, her online status never changed to "application referred to components" and went straight from "Application Received by DOJ" to "Selected for Interview."
Oh, and, on the interview. The best advice I can give is to make it clear (or pretend, at least) that all you have ever wanted to do is work for the DOJ and that you intend to spend your whole career there. |

I did not work for a firm 2L summer, so I had no offer. My classmates' experience varied, but I was surprised how many people were able to keep their offers open until they heard. I had one friend who was able to keep hers open until she heard about PMF, which, IIRC, was February. |

Unfortunately, DOJ offers are unofficially exploding (I say "unofficially," but many interviewers will tell you this). If you don't accept on the spot, they'll typically just call the next person on the list. I don't know whether they would make an exception for someone waiting to hear from another component, but I doubt it.
2. None of the people I know who were selected for interviews have received their travel notification yet (including the student intern who works in my office). |

You're the person who's interviewing with EOIR and Civil, right? If it helps at all, EOIR clerks are eligible to apply for the Honors Program a second time during their clerkship and OIL has become very fond of former EOIR clerks as new hires. They're hiring like crazy lately (mostly because the DOJ's previous response to the massive increase in circuit-level litigation on immigration matters was to farm it out to other components who in turn freaked out) and while it used to be fairly uncommon for people to move to OIL from EOIR clerkships, it's becoming more and more common. Certainly it's hard to speculate as to what the situation would be a year from now, but it might be worth considering taking an EOIR clerkship and then applying again to the Civil Division through HP next fall. You said you have a lot of immigration experience already, but the EOIR clerkship would put you ahead of a lot of the bulk of people OIL hires who have no immigration background at all. |

I think the selection of interviewees is the referendum on credentials; the decision of who to hire seems to be based more on the quality of the writing sample and how people came across in interviews.
In addition, some components (at least in the Monica Goodling era) were notorious for drilling interviewees on political matters (Civil Rights, for instance). I had a classmate who withdrew her Honors Program application after her interview with Civil Rights because she was so offended by the blatant partisanship. That's probably different now.
In addition, in most components the interviewers meet to do the hiring and share their impressions of the candidates. Final approval for hiring decisions is done at the AG level, actually -- and, in the Monica Goodling era, the files passed through the White House as well.
So, yes, the interview is important. They're not just screening for freaks, they're screening for people who just want to use the HP as a stepping stone to the private sector. Like all parts of the federal government, the DOJ prizes loyalty, mostly -- they're looking for people committed to a career in federal service. |

My understanding is that being selected as a finalist means that the component wants you and OARM gave them the go-ahead to give you an offer. However, there's no way to tell how far up on the chain you are. an ATR field office may select 4-5 people as finalists but only have 1 HP spot. In that case, they'll give the offer to their first choice, wait a week, and if they accept then you're done. Some components will give 2-3 offers for each spot and make it clear that it's exploding upon acceptance by anyone. |

I would guess that Civil Division cares the most. It seems to me that they weigh roughly equally an applicant's 1) interview, 2) objective academic credentials, and 3) desire to work for the government/division and experience in the field (e.g. econ degree for Antitrust, environmental law externships and clinics for ENRD).
Edit: I'm sure that the weight accorded to one's writing sample varies largely by division, but I know that in neither of my interviews had the interviewers looked at my writing sample. |

2. Pretty competitive. Lots of people come out of clerkships, and while not everyone is from a top 14 school, most people graduate at or near the top of their class. EOIR is, however, one of the components that routinely requests "exceptions" for hires that might not have the best grades or law review experience, but who demonstrate a particular interest or expertise in immigration.
3. A good bit, but I wouldn't worry about one typo.

Since starting law school I have worked for 2 immigration law firms and 2 immigration non-profits got an A in immigration law and am participating in the immigration clinic. I am bottom of my class bc of 1L grades as well...on the one hand, I feel as though grades aren't really an issue bc otherwise I would not have been interviewed, however, the judge who interviewed seemed to say that there is a lot of oversight up the chain of command in DOJ and that EOIR no longer has total control over who they hire. Cheburator, sounds like you have a really good shot-though I have no real basis for saying so. It's always good to have people calling in on your behalf! Also, the judge did say that there are always people who don't take the job once it's offered to them...any thoughts about that? Any thoughts about how much control EOIR has over who they hire? I know two people who were in EOIR honors program and while both were around top 1/3 of their classes, neither had any prior experience whatsever in immigration. Another post (http://www.infirmation.com/bboard/clubs-fetch-msg.tcl?topic=Government%20Lawyers&msg_id=003DFi ) says that they think Civil just checks references of anyone who interviewed (which seems like an enormous amount of work). So for that division, it might be meaningless.
Of course, it's all hearsay, so take it with a grain of salt. |

I have an offer at a good firm, and I think (not sure yet, but am in process of finding out) they will not have a problem w/ me leaving after one year to clerk, as long as I reasonably expect to return.
What would you do? |

Also, because the clerkship isn't for the term right after you graduate, by accepting a clerkship with this judge you're foreclosing any possibility of doing the Honors Program.

Date: November 14th, 2007 12:47 PM Author: Gold hairless gas station Subject: Clerk! Do the district court clerkship. If you really want to do DOJ, just apply again next year for after your clerkship. Your odds will increase, if anything. The clerkship will be awesome for your resume.
You still qualify for the honors program if you clerk. I'm a clerk and it's well worth it.
Do not turn down the clerkship...You can always reapply for DOJ after your clerkship and your odds are increased, but it does not work the other way around. If you turn down the clerkship, you may not get another chance.
Here is the two situations: 1) You take the district court clerkship. You defer your firm offer for a year. Next year, September 2008, you apply again to DOJ (you are still eligible as a clerk). You will find out by December 2008 whether or not you will get in. Your firm offer will still be open since you won't start until after September 2009. If you don't get DOJ then, you will still have your firm offer as a back up. If you do get DOJ and want to go, you can take it.
2) You decline the clerkship. If you don't get DOJ, you will go to the firm and won't get to reapply to DOJ until a few years down the line as an experienced attorney (no more honors program). Door is closed if you don't get an offer from DOJ. Of course, in the best case, you will get a DOJ offer.
So, #1 is the better scenario. Take the clerkship, and you probably won't regret it. |

The judge I interviewed with said they would make decisions mid december and the EOIR attorney i spoke with on Thursday evening told me she received her offer Dec 16th or something. I don't know if they are planning on really moving it up this year. We'll see. I dont think it's over yet...not even close actually. That said, I do wish my status would change!
Are you guys sure we will be given a formal NO if we are 100% not selected?

Edit: Also, I think someone said something about commitments in one of the threads above. That varies by Division, they told me. ATR has no official commitment, and while you're expected to stay a couple of years, there's nothing binding, and some people even leave before the first is up. |

Tax requires a four-year committment, so they may have a lengthier process to go through before extending offers, since they have to look at needs for four years.

I don't think the work they do is as exciting or cutting edge as in DC, but they get a lot of applicants who wouldn't apply to DC for geographic reasons.

my stats: mid-first-tier school, bottom quarter (or even lower) of class. decent amount of immigration and HR work on resume, including UNHCR. 1L summer internship with a large USAO, 2L volunteer summer internship (not SLIP, alas) with a large immigration court. no moot court, no law review.
my interview didn't go so well -- i wonder if that's what killed my chances. :( i'm really, really, really bummed right now. |

If you do not have a status change or a phone call by December 1, I have a suggestion for you. The PMF program application process began yesterday. The PMF program extends your eligibility for DOJ Honors for at least two years, (if you are a 3L) and quite possibly three years. Why don't you apply to the PMF (its not that hard to get in) and take a job with USCIS or another federal government agency that deals with immigation and then reapply to the honors program next year. The best part of the PMF program is the rotations. You can rotate to a component at Justice that deals with immigration (EOIR or OIL) and get yourself known. Then you can reapply, reinterview, and get selected. It sounds like alot of work, and not an instant result, but if you are serious about EOIR or OIL, you may have a better shot.

Also, it is close to South Padre Island and Matamoros.
Unfortunatly, ICE moves many asylum seekers from the Harlingen district to the STDC in Pearsall which is in the San Antonio District.
I choose Harlingen as number two because of the wide diversity of detainees in the area. For example, Port Isabel houses asylum seekers, simple EWI's, derivative citizens, and more AgFels than you would believe.
By the way, I am curious about the immigration clinics at other law schools. At the University of Texas, we deal nearly exclusively with detained asylum seekers. What do the others see? |

People clerk for EOIR, then sometimes spend a year or a couple as an EOIR atty advisor or with DHS, then become OIL litigators. Both my EOIR and OIL interviewers made this clear, and if you go look at the old OIL newsletters on their website where they welcome new hires there are examples of it.
Normally I'd say, if you got offered a good court location and think you'd enjoy the clerk gig for a year, easy, do that because it doesn't foreclose OIL, or any other Honors job really. But the OIL interviewer indicated (and some on this thread confirmed) they were hiring a LOT of people this year (more than usual), so getting hired next year could be harder than it is now. Just something to think about - although in your position I think I'd still take the EOIR gig if I liked the site. |

I had interviewed with EOIR and Civil-OIL, but then because of a positive response on another job situation, told OIL nicely I was no longer interested 11/15. I really thought I'd get an EOIR offer given my resume, and after my 5 court choices I checked that I'd consider going anywhere. I'm pretty confused and bummed.
The email was a form one from the Avue system saying I hadn't been chosen as a finalist for the HP, some components fill extra vacancies after the normal time period though, etc. |

But I finally emailed someone at DOJ and they told me that EOIR has completed its hiring process and thus I have not been selected. My status on the site still says "Selected as Finalist" and I never received a formal notification of my rejection.
Frankly, I am pretty mad about all this. I really don't see any other reason for my rejection than the fact that I am liberal and that I admitted during my interview that my interest in immigration law originally stemmed from the personal immigration experience of someone close to me. Stupid to say that during an interview, right? But still, I have all of the qualifications necessary, on top of three full years of federal service and a ton of immigration law experience, and I was just being honest...
I just read some of the news reports that came out around last April/May about political influence in the DOJ honors hiring process (ie DOJ systematically rejected applicants with "liberal" flags on their resumes) and am quite annoyed.
Anyone want to commiserate? |
