Besides "don't go to law school."
Every stupid blog has a dumb post on this now, but I'd prefer XO's wisdom.
Graduating from HYPS with a good gig lined up but very unsure about long-term plans.

I want to do something in public service, policy work, or politics, I think. Not interested in a life of striving for money and have no interest in working on Wall Street or anything like that. Was raised to believe that I should spend my life trying to help out the world rather than sucking on the corporate teet.
Very much would like to be in California long term, though.
I am very lucky to have no debt, but my parents do not have much money. I mean upper middle class, but they put most savings into making college debt-free for me and my siblings. What they have saved will get them through retirement but I won't inherit much of anything.

Yeah, internships at big think tanks during UG. Did some (unpaid) campaign volunteer work. Might try to hop on to a campaign and do more of that this summer (don't start my job until the fall).
Definitely well aware of the tension between my career goals and where I want to live. I really don't like DC from the summers I've spent there, but I realize I may need to settle there if I want to get serious about policy/gov't work. I'm holding out hope I can manage to find a path that keeps me mostly in California but still working in public service. Obviously it's ridiculous to be 22 and talking about maybe someday running for office in California or being attorney general of CA or something, but if someone asked me to set some very long-term ultimate life goals, those would be up there.
Still, would appreciate any advice (specific or much more general) on how to make my way through my 20s, how to not fuck up in life, etc.

a lot of stuff you've got to figure out for yourself, but i have one very clear and specific piece of advice: you are going to feel pressured to get some type of graduate degree. your family, your peers, your mentors are all going to encourage it. and with your career goals, you may very well eventually need one. you need to understand how much that will cost you before you sign up. sit down, type in the total debt amount into a calculator, and see how much your monthly payments are going to be, and for how long. consider how much you'll make when you get out. consider you may not even have a job at graduation.
the one big, easy to make mistake you could make right now is taking on debt that forces you to go down a career path for 10+ years just because you need to pay it back. you said you don't want to chase money, so make sure you don't let debt force you to.
my other piece of advice is going to sound corny but i'm going to say it anyway: dream big and take risks, both personal and professional. don't be a pussy.
edit: also don't get any girls pregnant.
