I'm licensed in another state and am taking the CA bar right now. Since I'm working full time I'm not taking BARBRI.
For the essays, I'm curious what they said in the lectures about the formatting. Is it just IRAC the fuck out of everything or is there anything else?

thanks. A few other questions.
What is the essay grade scale?
Second, Barbri said essentially no one had ever failed the NY exam who got at least 140+ on the MBE. Did they say any MBE score essentially guaranteed passing on the CA bar?

Does any website actually have the confirmed average passing essay score?
This website says 70 is borderline average

A few things:
1) I hope you're taking the full exam with MBE and not just the attorney's exam (only essays). The MBE will help raise your score (and to a comment above, MBE's don't transfer into CA).
2) A good strategy is to learn the fuck out of the MBE subjects and prof responsibility. You'll rape the MBE, and you'll also do well on roughly half of the essay portion (as PR is always guaranteed for the most part, and MBE subjects will involve 35-50% of the essay portion).
3) You're practicing so you should do well on the PTs. Take all this into account, and it really doesn't matter what you do on the random as fuck wills or community property essays. That said, those are easy too.
4) For scoring, a 65 is technically failing and 70 is technically passing based on an average. You'll probably get some mixture of 70s and 65s, with maybe a 75 or 80 thrown in with a 60 possibly if you just blank on one.
5) The formula I think is 34% MBE, 26% PT's, and 40% essays on a 2000 pt scale. Everything is converted into some #, don't even bother trying to figure it out. You're supposed to get like a 1440 or so , but that doesn't mean you need to get 72% right per se.
6) Definitely IRAC and be elementary as possible. Tons of headings and subheadings, make sure to address tandem issues always (e.g., conversion AND trespass to chattels). If you just read a bunch of sample answers, you can see the general structures you need for any given essay in each subject. It's pretty formulaic.
7) You won't know everything...but take solace in the fact that everyone else won't either (and most will know less).

do I just IRAC the fuck out of everything? I mean, do I literally break down all the elements of a rule?
E.g., burglary--every element gets a heading:
Breaking and Entering
Of a dwelling
Of another
at Night
With an intent to felony therein
like that? the barbri sample answers dont always do that but im going to do that shit for security.

if you don't know the law make it up
most importantly use all the facts. if you don't know how a given fact implicates a law, just make it up
