well generally we care about PPP to give an idea of the level of eliteness of a firm--how much business does it do, how successful is it, how much does it bill.

I would say revenue per lawyer is a better measure b/c it controls for partner/associate leverage to give you an idea of how successful the firm actually is...

and profits presumably depends on cost savings, which other than higher leverage, could mean lower benefits like nice offices, extravagent summer events, etc. High revenues only indicate high billings.

edit: this is generally from an associate's pov...High PPPs are better for the partners. but high ppp's relative to revenues also indicates it's harder to make partner--see Cahill....so if that's a goal, PPPs must be discounted by the lower chance of attaining them.

Revenue per lawyer is a "squeeze index." It's how much time and billable hours the firm can squeeze out of its associates. I'd stay away from firms with the top Revenue/Lawyer.

if you care about going to a top PPP firm, obviously you are more concerned about sucessful business or great clientele...i'm saying that revenue/lawyer is a better measure of that.

if you want a lifestyle firm, i'd say high ppp and revenue/lawyer are not what you are looking for.

plus PPP account for costs which seems more of a squeeze from both sides on associates--revenues AND costs, or time/billables AND salary/benefits/perks. revenues seems to only squeeze from one way.

If two firms have the same PPP, but one has much higher RPL, then associates there are probably working harder (or having "more responsibility," if you want to be positive about it). At the more leveraged firm, the partners are going to be just as rich (and hopefully just as happy), and you can slack a little.

but of course it comes at price of more difficult partnership.

however...why do we look at PPPs? it's to rate firms by success or something, even if it's stupid.

i'd say the revenue list looks more like a list we'd agree better approximates that...cahill, cadwalader drop down in the revenues list; munger, irell, williams and connely all shoot up dramatically. b/c of leverage probably.

Generally, there will be very little or no hold-back, so average partner comp. will be 90-100% of PPP.
