WHO CARE BOUT DIS WHITE HO?' nonsense. no one would have disputed calling the killer an 'illegal alien,' and the subtext of the entire story would have been that he is a horrifying specter of third-world invasion.

in the 80s, black people/minorities weren't even part of the media, for the most part. the anchors were all white males.

it was literally a split-screen: 95% of American white people on one side looking disgusted as the verdict was read; 100% of minorities on the other half of the screen jumping for joy that a POC got away with murder.

there was a much more stable sense of American consciousness being cohesive *white consciousness*. a black guy killing a white woman was horrifically disturbing.

Mollie Tibbets would have been viewed through this same hegemonic prism as 'America's daughter,' violated by 'the other.' the coverage would have involved Princess Diana type shrines and candle vigils. now, instead, she is just an embattled prop in a chaotic, decentralized free-for-all of anti-white loathing and minority/brown political ascendancy posturing.
