It was comparable to American History X (1998) in some ways, especially the early racist rants. Edward Norton wrestles with how his views make his own life worse, even though the film doesn't address his earlier rants; here, Ryan Gosling (who does not look Jewish at all, which is distracting) acts as a self-hating Jew, modeled after Dan Burros (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Burros ). He hates himself and hates Jews because he sees the Jewish God as a hatefully bully (if he exists at all; he says Jews worship the Torah without worshipping God), but also because he believes the Jews were cowards who did not defend themselves from the Nazis. At the same time, he has an inner split: as Israel means "he who struggles with God", a big part of him still wants to believe. The subplot between Gosling and his love interest was a high point - did she know who he was? Of course; she was masochistically attracted to his "tragic" course - and I also enjoyed the interactions between Gosling and the truly murderous neo-Nazi. Gosling was also correct that Jewish identity feeds off mainstream anti-semitism because it keeps Jews from assimilating, but he is wrong because that anti-semitism is a *response* to Jewish financial and moral predation. In other words, it's heads they win tails you lose.
The key scene from the film is when Gosling's love interest points out that only Jews focus on Jews so much, and even extreme anti-Judaism is in itself Jewish. Therefore, according to the love interest, TBF is Jewish. |
