Tacitus later also bemoaned the accountants, bankers, lawyers and weird religious cults that kept popping up when Eastern rebellion infiltrated the empire. thought leaders will lead you into the weeds and start splitting hairs between Finns and Swedes or something - call you crazy for inventing difference, but one casual glance at Australian aborigines and white Australians puts to rest forever any notion that racial groups are not vastly different
this seems like most basic and utilitarian human knowledge and we completed abandoned it for a very weird and useless religious notion of blank-slatism. To what end? |

You are forced to talk about diversity all the time--to accept The Other. But as soon as someone tries to talk about The Other in a way that diverges from approved scripts, or if The Other has opinions that diverge from sacred narratives--the meaning of diversity itself begins to slip. In doing so, the Westerner creates what one might call a Semantic Enclosure in which diversity is not diversity, but is curated display. True differance--the true Otherness that disrupts, delays and defers meaning is rejected as noise. This is the paradox of curated alterity-- where the West enshrines "diversity" not as ontological opening but as a symbolic placeholder-- a simulacrum of difference domesticated into brand-safe semiotic units. I said, “I just wanted to sweep the vestibule.” They wrote me up.
Tacitus saw this coming. Caesar warned us. Not about any one group—no—but about the metastasis of Meaning Management. About the rot that sets in when empire forgets how to say “no” to trinkets of the spirit.
First came the imported policies. Then the templated scripts. Then the monthly “difference audits,” which Tabitha from Corporate insists we conduct using scented markers and “feedback cloaks” sewn by local youth.
In our age, the new altars are SharePoint folders. The new Vestal Virgins are Credentialed Men of Soft Voice™ who facilitate empathy circles while hoarding billable hours.
It is all extremely equitable.
And extremely over.

At least that’s what she told me. I couldn’t really follow what she was saying and it didn’t make a lot of sense so I just nodded my head and said okay. |
