Maybe Nintendo could go back to the original roster, but allow players to select different iterations of a character from their different games. So you wouldn't just choose Mario, but SNES Mario, Super Mario Sunshine Mario, or Super Mario Odyssey Mario, who would have different movesets based on their games.
