Nidal Hasan was born in 1970 in Arlington County, Virginia. His parents migrated from Palestine to America in 1961 due to Israeli oppression against Palestinians. He is the eldest of three sons.
He graduated from high school and then enlisted in the military at the age of 18. He studied college while on post, he went ahead to gain an associate degree in science, a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, with honors, and minors in biology and chemistry, and an M.D. from medical school. He was also commissioned as an officer.
His father passed away in 1998, and his mother passed away in 2001.
Everyone who knew him said that he was gentle, quiet, and a sensitive man. He never harmed a fly in his whole life, never had a criminal record, was a straight A student, highly intelligent, and was exemplary.
But in 2009, the military decided to deploy him to Afghanistan. Knowing the history of American support for the oppression of Palestinians, he could not accept this reality, that too in Afghanistan, the poorest Muslim country on earth, a country which suffered decades of occupation and turmoil, he couldn’t accept being part of the US occupation, he couldn’t accept being part of oppression.
So he did something extreme, a man who never harmed a fly in his life, decided to kill his fellow comrades. The fork on the road drove him to sanity or madness, depending which perspective you look at it from.
He killed and injured dozens of fellow soldiers who were going to be deployed to Afghanistan alongside him. He was shot in the chest, he survived but was paralyzed.
In his trial, he admitted to everything. He said “evidence will show I was on the wrong side of America’s war, and I later switched sides.” He also said “We mujahedeen are imperfect Muslims trying to establish the perfect religion… I apologize for any mistakes I made in this endeavor.”
In court he argued “defense of others”, he said that the war against Afghanistan was unjust, and that the fellow soldiers he killed were going to be deployed to harm others, the people of Afghanistan, and the government of Afghanistan. He could not accept that.
He was sentenced to death on 28 August 2013, and today, the Trump government upheld the death sentence, and ordered that it must be done by a firing squad, and must be public.
All Muslims around the world are afraid to tell his tale, because apparently this man’s life, and this man’s story is too scary to tell, because America hates him. But he was a human being, a very kind, gentle, and a highly intelligent human being that could not tolerate the “war on terror” terror which was being unleashed by the US government around the world.
What he did was an extreme act of violence, but his story needs to be told. What drove the kindest and most harmless man to extreme violence? That too against his own? There is a lesson in that. The secret detention camps, the unimaginable torture, and the massacres unleashed on men, women and children can deeply affect the human conscience, even that of a soldier who is trained to not think.
