Second-tier student: Chances for clerkships?

Top 10%, possibly top 5% with a little gunning (3.7+ currently), LR with note selected for publication, but no e-board. Decent but not great LORs. Do I have a shot at any COAs or the more harder district cts (SDNY, namely)? What about like EDNY, D. MA, EDVA, anywhere in CA? How about state supreme courts in the Northeast? I know these threads are kind of silly, b/c so much is dependent on individual judges and other factors, but I'm trying to at least start planning out where I should apply, and could use any feedback I can get. |

I mean, just looking at http://lawclerkaddict2009.blogspot.com/ Brooklyn placed 2 with senior 2d Cir. judges; Cardozo and St. John's don't report anyone. You'd better talk to your LR staff and career services about who's gotten calls where. There's an outside shot that UG/LS alumni will look at your app, but it's going to be tough outside the top 5%, and no e-board, and not "great" LORs. SDNY, same problem. EDNY, fewer judges, still going to be rough. "Anywhere in CA," not sure why they'd be looking at the top 5% at B/C/SJ over the top 5% at Hastings/Davis.
State supreme courts in NE, probably a better shot, but again, look for LS alumni.
Really pore over who called people from your LS in the last few years, see where you'd have a chance. |

Your career services office should be working hard to get you something, and they will be willing to enlist top professors to help you get it. These schools place few clerks per year, but I know that Brooklyn will pull top students aside and really push for them with judges who are grads of the school or who are connected to the school's top profs.
Brooklyn and EDNY are a good match, obviously. If you're not looking locally (which I don't need to tell you will be a stretch), your best shot is to get a prof to pull strings somewhere--it need not be a prof you had. Express your interest in clerking to the administration (not just career services, but various deans), and see if they will help sell you.
