The Committee on Social Thought is an interdisciplinary, Ph.D. granting graduate program. Its guiding principle is that the serious study of many academic topics, and of many philosophical, historical, theological and literary works, is best prepared for by a wide and deep acquaintance with the fundamental issues presupposed in all such studies, that students should learn about these issues by acquainting themselves with a select number of major ancient and modern texts in an inter- disciplinary atmosphere, and should only then begin intense work on a specific dissertation topic. In their first few years of study, students select twelve to fifteen foundational or fundamental books that best inform the context and background of the issues they want to write about, and they read and study these books in discussion groups, tutorials, seminars and independently, and then sit a week long qualifying exam on some selection of their books.

yeah, it looks interesting. I'm competitive for the top departments in the humanities, and I'm considering looking into it more.

In that case, strike what I said earlier- I hope you get in. It's a very cool scholarly community they have over there.

thanks. I think the concept of interdisciplinary study is interesting, but I was worried how that would translate into finding a position at other universities. Based on the previous graduate placements, it looks like the students just go to the department they emphasized in their studies.

When I first heard of the program, I was hoping it fused the humanities with social activism and change, as naive as that sounds, instead of just pure scholarship and study. Perhaps that would be more along the lines of an MFA. I guess I was hoping the program would be so influential (and different) that it could train and lead their students to become authors and writers rather than just place them at teaching positions.

I'm not really aware of any serious academic program that is geared toward what you're describing (although certainly some divinity schools are known for that kind of thing)

"It exists to bring together scholars in a variety of fields sharing a concern with basic and trans-disciplinary issues, and to enable them to work in close intellectual association with other like-minded graduate students seeking to pursue their particular studies in this broader context. The Committee aims both to teach precision of scholarship and to foster awareness of the permanent questions at the origin of all learned inquiry."

yeah, I like what they're getting at in that paragraph but would ideally like to take it a step further than just scholarship. Professors like Kass have published books that go beyond the rarefied journals toward broader audiences, which I am interested in as a writer.
