- Don't drink any calories
- No refined carbs (bread, pasta, flour, rice, etc.)
- Lots of protein, decent amount of fat. Look for like a 50-30-20 breakdown (protein-fat-carbs) with most of the carbs coming from veggies.
- Lift heavy, and do compound exercises (squat, bench press, deadlift, etc.)
- Do HIIT (high intensity interval training) on a treadmill or spinning machine on days you don't lift.
- Do one 24-hour fast per week. Pick a day and don't consume ANY calories for 24 hours (but drink plenty of water, diet soda, tea, coffee, etc). My day is Thursday.

1) Consider your ordinary diet your baseline, and make calorie-reducing changes to it you can live with. The easiest thing to do is eat less than you used to of the same things. If you used to eat the whole burrito, just eat half and throw the rest away. Better is to order more wisely, but that probably takes more of a psychological adjustment. It's amazing how fast your body will adjust to a lower calorie diet.
2) Long calorie-burning exercise on the weekends. You can go out for a hike next weekend, lose one pound, and enjoy it.

3) Be aggressive with diet and exercise at first (when you're inevitably the most motivated), but listen to your body. If you start to feel systematic fatigue (e.g., your eyes are twitching and you feel lightheaded), you need to eat a little more and/or take it easier with the exercise.

Ketosis. No more than 30g carbs per day. Only water & lemon to drink(no artificial sweeteners, no diet soda, no dairy). Induce in the first week, it will give you horrible headaches. By the second week, the natural ketones will act as an appetite suppressant.
Reduce caloric intake as necessary, per current size vis-a-vis desired size, within the 30g carb limit.
If you're committed, you could do 700-900 cal per day and accomplish goal in 2 weeks.

Ketogenic diets do not have health detriments if done responsibly and are proven to be the most effective way for people to stay fit/cut.
Effect on breath is legit, but curable with mints, frequent teeth brushing, etc.
I'd rather get cut fast and maintain than plug it out over 6 weeks with minimal results.
Judgment call.

if not done responsibly, ketosis can definitely deplete muscle mass (not eating sufficient caloric intake, not eating high protein post-weight training).
i'd recommend ketogenic cycles, which involve extremely low carb intake for induction (20-30g per day), high protein (basically as much as you can stomach, but at LEAST 6 oz for dinner + 2-3 15g protein shakes, much more if you're lifting -- no less than 1000 calories less than your typical daily intake total).
once you've shifted in to ketosis for 2-3 weeks (fully depleted glycogen stores and begun cutting fat), you can shift to ketogenic cycles in which you carbo load 1 day (to help increase energy to lift/workout for the week), and it's much easier to maintain ketosis for the remainder of the week (typical 20-30g carbs per day, for remaining 6 days).
in my opinion, ketogenic cycles do not work unless you've done a full ketosis diet for 2-3 weeks. they aren't particularly easy. however, i've found them to be the fastest, most effective way to cut fat.

Do you just need to cut weight or do you want to lose fat?
You could cut 10-15 pounds of pure water weight in less than a week. Hell, you could do it in one day, although it would suck really, really bad.

^This is legit, and it mirrors a lot of the advice already given. Eat regular meals. Cut out all refined carbohydrates. Drink a lot of water. One of the other posters mentioned fasting once a week, but Tim Ferriss recommends the opposite. I'm not a nutritionist or anything, so I'm not sure who to go with there. I followed this diet, cheat day and all, and lost about twenty-six (195 to 169) pounds in a bit over a month. I also did HIIT every day though, mostly with burpees for the high intensity portion and jumping jacks for the low intensity portion.
If you want a more chemical solution, try scoring some ephedra and do an ECA stack. Just google it.
