schools really need to stop taking away class rankings for clerkship applicants. when you get around 1000 applications and about 1/3 of them don't have class rankings, you end up throwing out most of the 1/3 unless the applicant appears superhuman. no one wants to troll through 300 law school transcripts to get a feel on how well an applicant did in school. it's even more annoying when career services sends your judge a 2 page explanation on how students are graded and (stanford) how elite and prestigious it is to get an H or whatever.

so HYSC are at a disadvantage then? they don't give pre-graduation rankings (and YC no rankings ever)

yep. sad because if all applicants were weighed equally they would probably beat the shit out of all these T1 top 10ers.

actually, if a judge is looking to hire from only a few schools it is obviously not a disadvantage. a lot of judges do this. a lot of judges do not.

Agreed. Most of the applications that I pulled for my judge are from students at T14s that still rank. Much easier to see that someone is in the top 5%.

My chambers does, but we don't use OSCAR... since OSCAR allows you to narrow down the list of applicants based on set criteria, it's far more likely your app will be read if you apply to non-OSCAR judges.

if the person's school doesn't rank, what is likely to make you take a closer look at the person's resume/materials?

If the transcript is almost all H's (or whatever crap the schools use for highest grade), and there is LR, I'll look more closely. But we mostly consider Harvard/Stanford students only if their profs call. They really do need to go back to class ranking.

lol I'm serious. I didn't think Yale was so much ahead of Harvard/Stanford that those students need a prof to call to get the app looked at whereas Yale ones don't. It doesn't sound right given clerkship placement stats.

though it's not as bad as the massive number of seton hall apps that we receive in hard copy (even though we accept online apps)

Boalt apps at least have HH grades, which correspond to top 10-15%. But now the Stanford and Harvard apps all look the same, because they give out Hs there like candy.

what about UChicago grades. We're on the 186 scale and we don't rank. There are honors designations at graduation and the top 5% or so get K&E scholar status during law school. LR is grade-on partially.

Anyhow, how do you interpret uchi if you've ever run across it? We do indicate in the transcript guide the rough class ranks and are supposed to attach that to the transcript

Sounds like needless obfuscation. If you're going to give the materials for people to compute a rough class rank, why not just provide the damn rank?

cuz we want to be RIGOROUS, but not TOO RIGOROUS. The school does "rank" since there is coif and LR grade-on. They just don't tell you it and not sure if there's any way to find out

the difference is that dennis hutchinson knows where people rank, and gives them advice on which chambers they would be competitive for (and occasionally hooks it up).
