the chances of it not being real are about as close to mathematically zero as possible

i haven't actually looked into it much tbh. you are a knowledgeable and intelligent poaster so i believe you if you say it happened

does your answer change if we narrow the claim to US astronauts walking on the moon in 1969?

When you look at all the other shit we did in the 50s and 60s it doesn't seem far fetched. No one doubted it at the time

let me put it this way, and this is how any disinterested rational mind would view it: there are serious questions about every piece of 'evidence' they provided, and serious questions about the lengths they went to *not* to provide (or not to preserve in the case of the telemetry data, etc) irrefutable, unequivocal evidence supporting a claim as incredible as 'we went to the moon.'

instead, every piece of evidence, without exception, is dubious on many levels, flimsy.

this makes any rational person begin to wonder.

Almost any historical event can be made to look suspicious if you isolate each piece of evidence and demand that it be individually “irrefutable” and “unequivocal.” It’s a typical crank pattern to list off objections to individual pieces of evidence like that without inheriting the explanatory burden of an alternate hypothesis.

all the more reason for them to have planned ahead and provided strong evidence, rather than simply saying: "hey, we took these 5 photos that look exactly like the Lost in Space TV show set we just happened to build for 'astronaut training' at NASA which is visible in other pre-mission photos. anyway, gotta go!"

it would have been very simple to avoid/mitigate the controversy. instead, they went out of their way not to avoid it (by providing only the weakest possible forms of evidence), which any rational person would find suspicious.
