I know a 2L who is seriouly considering it.

Is it prestigious at all? if he wants to find an attorney job in the future, will it help?

It's worth considering. PMF is extremely competitive (only about the top 5% of applicants receive offers). An offer gets your foot in the bigfedgov door with a guaranteed GS-12 or GS-13 slot depending on the agency.

It's absolutely amazing how competitive it's gotten. 15 years ago they had to beg grad schools to get students to apply. They accepted about half of all applicants. Lol at how times have changed.

holy fuck don't try to ruin this bro's life.

it is pretty competitive (more like 10%), but there are no lawl jerbs offered through pmf and most of the jobs are more like gs7 or gs9. idk about gs7, but I think gs9 is like $42k/yr.

Most jobs are gs-9 and some are gs-11. However PMF's get auto promotions each year so that after 3 years you're already at gs 13. Gs-9 is about 55k in the major metro areas. The pay starts low but reasonably competent people are at gs-13 to 14 within 5 years.

The auto promotions generally take you to GS-13 within 3 years, which is at least 90K unless you're stuck in ARE country.

You can find developmental assignments in your agency's OGC or become a SAUSA for 4-6 months, but finding a permanent legal position is tough.

It's good if you want a fedgov management or policy job. However, there are no attorney positions offered through pmf and if you do it you're pretty much giving up on a career as a practicing attorney. That's not necessarily a bad thing given the legal market these days.

With regard to the stats saying 5-10% of applicants get jobs from it, keep in mind that this applies to overall number of applicants, not to finalists. Once you're a finalist, you're pretty much assured of getting something if you have a half decent resume. All it takes to become a finalist is a top 10% score on a fucked up easy exam that you take against all kinds of TTT masters goons and the like (I was a finalist). The huge downside is that you can't practice law, salary starts quite low, and welcome to pwn city if you ever lose/leave your job. There aren't a lot of other jobs out there for policy oriented, non-practicing lawyers.

My old DC roommate was a JD holder in the PMF program. A few things.

1. Super fucking competitive. The test is random as hell. Hard to get and they apparently always change the interview format.

2. It's very policy, management, communication, economic heavy. Legal jobs are hard to come by.

3. That said, it's not true that you cannot become an attorney from the position. My roommate worked at an OGC and then stayed on after the Fellowship. I met some of his friends who went to honors programs *after* the fellowship and a few were able to find ways into attorney-advisor roles.

4. Also, there actually are genuine attorney/lawyer jobs in the Fellowship. Some of them are not 905s, but there are many agencies with administrative law specialists who have different titles, but for all functional purposes they are lawyers.

5. I think the exit options heavily, heavily depend on the agency and your experience. Someone with policy experience on the affordable care act is going to get into health consulting. Obviously the Department of State might not help that much.

6. From what I gather, it's easy to get a job from it, but there is a clear hierarchy of positions. In the legal world, my roommate from a good law school said there are "secret" PMF type jobs where the agencies don't publish it but they look for obvious good law students who fell through the cracks and hook them up.

7. It's pretty prestigious. Government world - absolutely. Also, I think the top schools in it are still elite institutions. ITE it's like a quasi-honors program.

I'm a current PMF with a JD. I think it's a great program. But you are unlikely to get a legal job out of it.

I am 100% OK with this: I have no desire to ever practice law.
