one good friend only hangs out with me when his wife is out of town. he's always excited to hang out with me tho, so it's not like he doesnt like me. he calls me on the way home from work to say hi, but never calls when his wife is around.

When my mom had me, she tells me that she made sure she nurtured friendships with all of her friends - her married mom friends would meet up for walks so they could talk to adults about something other than playdates and pooping, she would talk to her single girlfriends about travel and careers and books, she'd make sure to connect with friends outside her gender and age cohort, and so on.
A corollary to this is to pick a spouse who doesn't micromanage your social life. I would never tell my BF to stop hanging out with someone unless (1) it was a toxic friendship that was hurting him, or (2) if that person repeatedly exposed him to unhealthy behaviors. |
