I dunno what's so great about MBA's. In NYC a BA from CuNY's Baruch makes like 80k avg. PLus law degrees seem to be much more prestigious in my opinion, a businessman is not prestigious unless he makes money, while even a gov't lawyer has some academic prestige.

then show me the data for "10 years out" of BOTH HLS and Anderson graduates instead of making empty claims, since I've given a link to solid data

edit: I'm also applying to one biz school, but i'd never make a claim such as yours. Knowing the brilliant classmates at HLS I have, I know they will do really well and i'm in a luckier situation to have met them in a setting where we actually discuss topics we care about, rather than networking and knowing that your classmates might be judging you based on your networking-worthiness

That is why I'm not wasting two years in the U.S. going to biz school and am going to Europe for one year programs

By the way, I'm also only applying to INSEAD (maybe also IMD), a 10-month program. The entry requirement includes a foreign language other than English though.

Put up a credible link. That figure is bogus and you full well know it.

Wharton undergrads who get MBAs don't even make an average of 400K 10 years out, thus there is no reason to think the TTTs of UCLA do better. This is also to say nothing of the median (which is lower) and the fact that the people who actually respond to these surveys are much more likely to have higher salaries (and even be employed) than those who don't.

i'm certain most people don't consider it a dream job..... you're underestimating people

for example, i know quite a few people at HLS who are going to Goldman, McKinsey (split with top NY firm), etc. I also know a critical mass of people who will be working overseas with highly connected folks

it's how you use your degree not what kind of degree you have.... many of the people figure this out when they're at HLS and know that the degree opens many doors rather than channel them to just one profession

Edit: I only cited GS and McKinsey because they appeal the most to MBAs. Personally I'd rather do something else

wno matter how many people at hls are going to mckinsey, goldman, etc.., it will still be far less than the number coming from any decent b-school. Of course, MBAs can't become lawyers, but who the hell wants that?

the bottom line = only go to law school if you want to be a lawyer. if you want to be a banker, there are far more effective ways to do this.

I know 4 HLSers who got offers from McKinsey from my section alone (about 75 people), and that's just of the people I know. They're also ramping up recruitment at HLS more and more each year. One recruiter said "HBSers usually overestimate their ability, and HLSers underestimate theirs."

Edit: not to mention these HLSers I know are 2Ls who are getting "internships." Probably more 3Ls can also get offers from McKinsey. The "internship" data for UCLA MBA doesn't look that great.

At least at HLS or another top 6, the competition for these positions will be much less stiff since there a far fewer people will even be attempting to get these positions whereas at any B-school, you're competing with your whole class. The HLS name should easily be good enough to get a person into the door, someone whose done their research and interviews well shouldn't have much of a problem.

you are not competing against your "whole school," just a subset interested in these jobs. Secondly, MBAs are a known commodity, much more so than HLSers. MC and banking firms will always go with what they know as opposed to some risky commodity like a law student.

Yes, but that "subset" is a lot larger at any bschool than at HLS.

"Secondly, MBAs are a known commodity, much more so than HLSers."

As someone whose worked in both biglaw and private equity, and dealt with many bankers, I'm pretty certain that HLS has more alumni at top levels of Goldman and Mckinsey than UCLA's bschool. I haven't seen these "phantom alumni" of UCLA's MBA school going most of Goldman's deals. The Goldman guys who have MBAs are disproportionately likely to be from Wharton, Columbia, or HBS.

why does everyone here so desperately need the assurance that they just happen to be doing the best, most lucrative thing in the world?

and somehow i doubt this path was a smooth and certain as is suggested:

"I could easily continue with my biglaw job, make my 200k a year and keep going until they tell me I won't make partner."

among everyone i've seen leave at the same stage, quite the opposite was true.

but, of course, no one here has ever sucked at something and then moved onto something else, or gone to a 10th or 20th best school that isn't extraordinary in some hidden way. perhaps it's just a matter of attending "mba fairs."

It seems like everyone has forgotten the hackneyed rule of 'statistics dont lie, but they say anything you want them to.' lets suppose this joe_schmo is at least telling the truth (probably a stretch in itself). its still a worthless statement. at UNC-CH, the most lucrative major over the past 25 yrs is Geography. Why? Because Michael Jordan was a geography major and is now a multi billionaire. On the slight chance Joey V isnt talking out of his ass about the UCLABS stat, its surely based upon skewed data. its like saying a greater % of Dry Cleaner owners are millionaires tha HLS grads. it may be true, but it doesnt make any sense to pass up HLS to go into the dry cleaning business.

let's acknowledge that this study does exist. joe vag was not lying.

rip apart the study if you must, rip apart his decision to pursue an mba if you think it's foolish, attack his personality if you don't like him... but apparently the attacks above concerning whether the survey exists were unfounded.

I've taken some finance and accounting courses...they were fairly easy (got A's and A+'s without trying), but extremely, mind-numbingly boring. I was an Econ major freshman year and switched out of that too because I found it boring. So, I don't like handling money.

I believe that the employment at graduation is only about 75% at UCLA MBA. Anyone have access to the USNews number? The UCLA employment pdf linked to above says 95%, but it also says only 78% are seeking employment -- which you know is bullshit. 95%*78% = 74%

The not seeking jobs is just code for "we want to pad our employment stats to make our incoming students feel good." Does anyone really think that 22% of the class isn't seeking a job?

I am sure the school would count these individuals. These b-schools are notorious for doctoring their employment stats. For example, Wharton will hire a significant number of students, who did not get normal jobs, to do some crap job at the school just so they can pump up their employment stats. To think that they wouldn't count students who actually had jobs is highly unlikely. Believe me, there is not much demand for someone who graduates in the bottom quarter of UCLA b-school. Yet, hls grads in the bottom 25% get biglaw.
