Most firms are pushing back start dates with the assumption/hope that work increases in the near future. To quote Dewey:
"Our hope is that by postponing the start date for your class, workflows will have increased across our practices and we will be able to give you challenging assignments from day one."
In other words, if shit isn't better by the new start date, expect to get pwn3d.

and Thacher Proffitt. If things don't pick up, and they may not, start dates could be pushed back further. The problem for juniors is that they are easily replaced. There are and will be tons of freshly minted law school grads to do the grunt work.

Yeah that's what I envision. They keep pushing back start dates until like August 2010, and then they realize they might as well just take the fresh batch.
What's the logic in fucking over someone who's been relying on an offer (whether or not that's an intelligent thing to do) just to take someone else fresh out of school? (especially if the '09 grad got some shitlaw or public interest experience or something like that and has already passed the bar)
I missed that one thread that clerk just linked to - thnx for that, but I did realize this had been discussed before, I was just trying to get a nice summary in one thread that I could send to a friend so he knows what's up. By the way this is a good one as well.

lol at *feigns surprise*
k, so seriously, the bottom line to your friend is it's pointless to guess and it won't matter anyway.
some firms that have done pushbacks will look wise for scrimping, for others it's an sos sign - no way to know. BUT it works the other way too - there are firms that are in deep shit who won't want to do pushbacks so they can stay under the radar for the next few months, get their partners' ducks in a row etc.
further, she won't be admitted till January 2010 at the earliest, and HR at any firm won't have any interest in interviewing candidates who *may* have a job...
