Freedom! sought to educate schoolchildren on American slavery. In particular, it used Oregon Trail-style mechanics to educate kids on the Underground Railroad. However, for reasons that will be seen in this thread, the game was quickly protested by parents and pulled from schools, with many copies deliberately destroyed. |

There was this black dude in his late teens that worked there, and he was assigned to the grill. Basically, his job all day was to flip hamburgers on flame grill, but he had a tendency to get board and just wonder off. This middle-aged prole white woman who managed the place really struggled as a manager - she was constantly stressed out, over-reacted to everything, and was really difficult to work for. Anyway, she got fed up with this guy one day and literally took a rope and tied one end around his waist and the other to the grill so that he was constantly tethered to the grill.
Can you imagine the media circus that would happen if she did that today? |

The parents of an 11-year-old black student have sued his school district for classroom use of a computer game in which players take on the role of enslaved Southern blacks trying to escape.
In the game, called "Freedom!," players start off as illiterate and are referred to as "boy" as they try to gain the educational skills necessary to head to the North, said the Federal lawsuit filed by the parents, George A. Vinson and Sonja Campbell-Vinson.
The lawsuit contends that one character, Grandfather Cato, has lines written on the computer screen like this: "I sees a runnin' look in yo' eyes, chile. How c'n I help?"
Ms. Campbell-Vinson said last week that she found it hard to believe that the Tempe Elementary School District could allow such a game to be put into its classroom computers.
The Aug. 17 lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from the district and the Minnesota Educational Computing Corporation, the software company that sold the game.
The parents say their son, Brian, was humiliated by classmates while playing the game last September and that his civil rights were violated.
"He was hurt that people were making fun of the characters in the game," Ms. Campbell-Vinson said. "It was very condescending to Brian as a black. He woke up crying at night. He was upset that he was being thought of as a slave."
"Freedom!" was deleted from school district computers last year after complaints from Ms. Campbell-Vinson and other parents. The software company pulled it off the market in 1993 and said it had instructed school districts to destroy any copies they had.
A lawyer for the company in Brooklyn Center, Minn., declined on Friday to comment on the lawsuit. Todd Brown, a lawyer for the district, said he was surprised by the lawsuit, because the Tempe district should not have been using the game last year. |
