You need to kill your USMLE and have at least some semi-prestigious research experience if you want to match in rad onc. If you couldn't cop 30 on your MCAT, most likely you would have ended up as a GP working 60 hours per week performing rectal exams on fats and olds. You usually have to gun like crazy to match in rad onc: you need research experience at the bare minimum, and you also need to do visiting rotations at schools where you hope to match (or at schools where you can shmooze a famous professor who can write you a recommendation). Radiation oncologist generally don't have near as much patient time as regular oncologists. You have one onc for chemo and one for radiation. The radiation onc may well only speak to you once where as the regular onc or his NP will see you every 2 weeks while the treatment is ongoing.
