People forget how destructive the conventional firebombing of Japan was. We destroyed Tokyo and other major cities without a single atomic weapon, just by sending squadrons of B-29s with incendiary weapons.
The nuclear bomb target cities were picked from the ones that were not hit by heavy conventional bombardment.
The bombing of Nagasaki was actually a huge clusterfuck. The plane was supposed to bomb another city, and was seconds away from doing so, but could not make visual contact with the target due to a fortuitous fire. So they flew to Nagasaki and dropped it there. They almost ran out of fuel on the way back home.
Nagasaki was a horrible target for an atomic bomb - the city's layout meant that the surrounding hills absorbed much of the blast and it killed fewer people than Hiroshima despite being a more powerful bomb.
