Failed at getting a real job

Worked in a regulatory and compliance over the summer for $20/hr.

Boss wants me to stay on. Don't know if it will still pay $20/hr (or $40k/yr, whatever. I'm guessing/hoping it will be significantly more, as they were recruiting from grad programs)

But it would require me to drop out of law school.

TAEK? At what point (salary-wise) should I seriously consider this option given my shittastic legal career prospects

So take on 60k more in debt for possibly worse prospects? Or do you believe in 3L hiring

you're already 120k in the hole.

you could get a better job by looking on craigslist.

And prospects for these CL legal jobs 5 years down the line?

At this job, I'd eventually overtake my supervisor (who is, according to glassdoor.com, making about 100-120k right now) (so I'm actually guessing I'm not starting at 40k--but also probably not at 100k)

Couldn't do it part-time--best case scenario is taking a year or two off and coming back later.

Why can't I do it part time?

Because my school and the job are a couple hundred miles apart, and I don't think my school allows part time?

Considering the "take a year off" option, though. But then I'll always be a temp hire--if I do this, I'd like to do it forreals

This actually might be credited. But given non-legal nature of work, will the 45k tuition be worth it?

I doubt it still happens much ITE, but when I was a 3L, firms let former SA 3L's come in and work. Some HLS and YLS students would spend most of their weeks in NYC. This is totally doable.

Is there a law school closer to the job? Perhaps you could arrange to be a part time visiting student there and still get your degree from the T10.

Don't you pay tuition to the hosting school? If so, it's unlikely that they wouldn't let you visit.

So I made a bad choice 2 years ago. Finishing law school doesn't seem to guarantee much more than that these days.

Bird in the hand is worth two in the fucking bush.

Is the place you're working going to set you up for exit options in the future?

I really like the idea of just going back for finals. At this point, you can easily keep up with reading on your own time and do well enough on the finals. I have a professor that started his own consulting business his 3L year and he did this. In fact, you could probably tell your dean and professors your situation, and I'm sure they would help.

Bird in the hand like the poster above said. Transfer to a night law school. It does not matter the prestige of the school anyway at this point.

If you just returned for finals this is also a good plan.

I would say to take this job and figure out any means by which to go to a night program. However, if it doesn't work, I would say drop out and take the job (ESPECIALLY if you are on loans and don't have rich mommy/daddy paying).

This job is particularly appealing in that you will be able to transition AFTER law school and working there. And also: consider that $40k is not too far off what the starting salary is for those of us who miss BigLaw.

I had a similar situation with you regarding a job which had NO potential of me being able to continue after law school (long story). However, I couldn't resist the money ($80k/year for the last 3 years of law school if I went part-time). So...I transferred to part-time, and worked the job (sorry to hear that your law school and job are not in the same city; this is difficult).

I kind of regret the fact that I was booted out the door from this job and am unemployed now...but the job paid the bills (living and tuition).

For you, try to hold on to any job which you can keep after law school.

Don't take the job.

Or, take the job and do a 3L "visitation" (it's not a transfer, so you still get your T10 J.D.), you're just a visiting dood---to the local law school.

Or, take the job, stay enrolled in the easiest non-participation classes possible, and get/pay your buddies to help you out with notes and recordings of lectures (should be a piece of cake with all the MP3 recorders on the market now). That, plus outlines from previous years, will guarantee B+s or better PROVIDED that the prof. doesn't consider participation in grading.
