Fish that are deep enough to be below the surface remain unaffected, while only those very close to the surface are at risk of being harmed. This is because water's conductivity causes the electricity to travel horizontally rather than penetrate deeply.

It can take years to reboot and restore a lake after a major lightning strike especially if it cascades through an underwater stump system. In those interim years, the lake is a real waste land. I think this thread demonstrates that a combination of electrical spread on the surface of the water, electrophoric activity, protective slime, and carefully timed jumps keeps the fish very much alive during lightning strikes. |
