Why doesn't socialized medicine work in large countries?

As things currently stand the US spends by far the most per capita of any developed country on medical expenses yet has below-average medical resources, below-average health outcomes and 50 million people with no coverage.
It's hard to think of a system that could be worse than the current one. |

PS: there are many countries which have mixed public/private healthcare systems, there are more than two options. |

Just answer how our system will be fixed by socialized medicine. I am willing to be convinced. I am open to new ideas. |
