the common wisdom is that socialized medicine works in smaller countries, but won't work in places like the US. Why is that?

Social cohesion. In a homogeneous society, like Finland or Japan, there's no such thing as an ethnic underclass. You don't have to worry that your ethnic group is paying a disproportionate share of their taxes toward the care and feeding of some other.

But even in a homogenous society, there will still be an underclass, just of the same cultural/ethnic background as the upperclass. So the problem of taking care of the lower class still exists.

i dont get this. britain is a big country in terms of population. canada is a big country in terms of land mass. both have functioning natinal health care schemes.

The only reason Canada's plan is considered functional is that the rich can go to the US to get their treatment instead of sitting on the 2-year waitlist.

If it's common wisdom please give some examples of other "large" countries where socialised medicine doesn't work.

As things currently stand the US spends by far the most per capita of any developed country on medical expenses yet has below-average medical resources, below-average health outcomes and 50 million people with no coverage.

It's hard to think of a system that could be worse than the current one.

I'm waiting for some examples of what you in your OP claimed was common wisdom.

Let's establish that before we start thinking about solutions.

PS: there are many countries which have mixed public/private healthcare systems, there are more than two options.

Ok, maybe it isn't common wisdom, but it is a common thought among many experts, and I am not sure why. I am not saying it is a bad idea. I am not sure.

Just answer how our system will be fixed by socialized medicine. I am willing to be convinced. I am open to new ideas.

If you control for automobile accidents and murders, the US has a higher life expectancy than socialized medicine countries. Yes, we spend more, but we get more.

The difference would be even more dramatic if you include our shitty diets.

Americans generally have terrible lifestyles. Obesity, lack of physical activity, very high stress levels and working hours. In certain poorer neighborhoods drug use and alcohol dependency is epidemic. That's definitely something you have to account for when evaluating the US medical system.
