Ok so it's been a while since I updated...and now, the week before finals, seems like a perfect time to procrasti--catch up
If you haven't heard already, yes, it's true, I am actually ENGAGED I know. Before Keith, my longest relationship didn't make it past the three month mark. And who can forget my gluttonous freshman year...and not on food
But alas, just like I retired my pom poms last weekend, it's time to hang up my inapporpriately short skirts and come-fuck-me heels. Because by nothing short of a miracle, I've found a (half) Asian boy who's 6'3, shares my sense of humor and my love of Law and Order SVU, cooks and cleans up after me, wants to teach me tennis and golf, knows how to play Chinese poker and use chopsticks, and loves my parents.
And has the good taste to say it with Tiffany's:
We spent a lovely weekend at the Ritz in DC, and as we left the restaurant, the hostess called me Mrs. Perry. I think that's when it sunk in--scary, but in a good way
In other news, I'm just about done with law school apps--and about a month away from either indescribable bliss or suicidal tendencies. I chose not to apply to any safety schools...so if anyone has a way of feeding me next year, it would be greatly appreciated. |

I'm having a great time this summer here in Ghetto-ville, USA and I've met some truly unforgettable people, but in about a month, I'll be going back to the D...then to cheer camp then classes...I'm mad excited to see everyone again, but I re-realized something: Nearly all of my close girl friends, including both my roommates, have boyfriends: Allison and Chris, Cindy and Stu-butt, Yiyi and Bowser, Trishi and Will, Courtney and Jordan, the list continues. What is wrong with me? Why am I seemingly incapable of a deep, meaningful relationship? I haven't had a 'boyfriend' since like junior year of high school. *sigh* Tony...

And it was the direct effect of meeting a particular guy who's unlike anyone I know. In short, this guy seems to be everything my parents have ever dreamed of. And sadly, my parents always seem to be right in the end. But of course, just because nothing can ever go as hoped in my life, he doesn't like me.
Yes yes I know what everyone would tell me, "you're young, move on, there's plenty of other guys out there, etc etc"
But move on to what? More disappointments? I mean I had no desire to settle down last year and I had so much (perhaps too much) fun playing the field but at the end, I'm still alone. I just want something real, something stable, something to go home to every night and to get rid of this terrible hollow ache inside me.
And my current surroundings aren't helping either. Just about everyone I hang out with here is dating to marry. A lot of them, including my roommate and the girl I'm subletting from, are going to marry their current boyfriends. True they are all medical students, and 4 or 5 years older than me, but I still have memories from 4 years ago fresh in my mind...freshman year of high school--trip to Orlando, madly in love with a certain Matt B., Jess and Evan were dating, my GPA topped out at 4.9--and to think that after that same interval, I'll be on the brink of marriage?
However, being around them has had a maturing effect on my outlook on guys. All the superficiality of my previous taste in guys are steadily melting away. And for the first time, I'm actually looking at Asian guys. Perhaps they're not all asexual after all And after careful consideration, I do honestly believe that it will be in my best interest to marry Asian.
I mean, I've previously scorned Asian guys and hanging out with Asian people in general because all the Asians I knew in Kansas were FOB-tacular. But now, here, I find that I am more comfortable with them. We can relate in much deeper ways than I can with a blonde soccer player, regardless of how hot he is. I know I want Asian culture to premeate my life and the lives of my descendents. I know I want my children to speak Chinese as well as they speak English. And living on American food for the rest of my life would be like the cruelest torture.
Aarrgghh...I'm thinking way too far ahead...or am I? I purposely picked Dartmouth over JHU and other colleges because of the relatively few Asians on campus but now I'm wondering if I just screwed myself over.
But you know what, I have a queer confidence that it's all gonna work out in the end. What's meant to happen will happen. Life is a wonderous, unpredicatable journey full of possibilities...I just hope I won't have to go through it alone. |

Back in the states from Shanghai. Feels good not to have to worry about finding a bathroom after every time I eat.
This morning the reality of law school application crashed down on me unexpectedly after watching the Lion King in bed. Logically, I know the hard part (LSAT) is over and all I need to do now is write my personal statement and gather rec's...but this feeling of...looming doom....I can't shake it. I vividly remember feeling like this while applying to college...but in high school, I really had nothing to worry about--I had a 4.8 and a 1530 on the SAT--I was bound to get in somewhere. Now there's a real possibility that I won't...*gulp*
In addition, according to a book written by the former dean of admissions at U Chicago Law, admissions officers are an "overwhelmingly left-leaning bunch." Does this mean I should downplay or even omit my office and involvement in College Republicans? But the completely clear insinuation of this was spelled out in the book: to these people, black/hispanic/native american = "minority," Arab/Asian = "white" No wiggleroom whatsoever. Well fine then, let's erase my immigrant history, my years in ESL, paint me some blonde hair and blue eyes, and I'll be on my way. |

Eh, whatever. So I've got 2 midterms this week--I haven't gotten a B since sophomore fall (knock on wood) and I don't plan to start again now. I'm skipping Homecoming to go to DC this weekend and visit my Keith Drunken debauchery can happen any weekend, but this one's reserved for us.
I'm so happy I have Keith...as it turns out, after almost 9 years of playing the field (since my first 'boyfriend,' John, in 7th grade) what I really needed all along was an older, more mature guy--As in someone who doesn't just sit on their ass in their frat house, get drunk on cheap beer, play Xbox, order EBA's and call it a fucking day. Someone who doesn't need the bonds of pointless fraternal alchoholism to feel like a man nor to form 'leagues' of so-called "fine men" to act like one.
Freshman year, wide-eyed, wonder-filled, and naive, I respected them for forming such strong, unwavering, faithful friendships that seemed to strengthen themselves and each other. Today, 3 years later, I'm able to see beyond that into their dark pits of low self esteem, lack of true confidence, and utter codependence. I've watched some/most of them straddle the line of depression as their pretenses of happiness wither away into late night drunken phone calls and attempted grasps of what they can't have. Similarly, my respect for them has rotted into pity and marginal disgust.
Today I reserve my respect, and ultimately love, for someone who truly deserves them. I love Keith for his personal strength and unpretensious intelligence, for his ambition and perseverence, for his honesty and integrity, and most of all for his kind and open heart. Sure he has his faults (the only person in the world who's more stubborn than me), but all in all, he is perfect...for me.
It's been almost 9 months, most of which has been long distance, but it's been worth everything, and has been a thousand times more fulfilling than a so-called 'relationship' on campus. As someone observant once said, a relationship that starts in a basement rarely goes far beyond it. |
