As it turns out, Dahl was not a big fan of Germans either (nor were many of his conservahero Christian countrymen like Chesterton and C.S. Lewis).

I remember him talking in the adulthood-half of his autobiography (Going Solo after Boy) about the arrogance of Germans during the lead up to WWII;

And both Chesterton and Lewis were highly critical of the fanatical German obsession with eugenics beginning at the turn of the 20th century, including the largely German aggression of WWI (not the healthy social incentive kind of eugenics which all functional civilizations have had - rather, the centralized aggressive State meddling kind).

But I think the main takeaway here is that - as guys like Chesterton, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Jean Raspail, Malcolm Muggeridge, and all the rest said - Europe and European people have been on the decline since the Reformation and the "Enlightenment" (which ushered in the "blank slate" mentality aka playing God, along with "noble savage" worship which persists to this day eg Black Lives Matter).

There have been plenty of opportunities to turn things around (like the aforementioned Belle Epoque; the 1800s Medieval Gothic revival in art and architecture; Disneyland's love letter to White Christian civilization, of course).

And there still are plenty of wholesome opportunities, thank goodness! As I said in one of my earlier threads about "John Denver and Doris Day Nationalism":

Dirda's article discussed many of the other criticisms of Dahl's writing as well, including his alleged misogyny.
