If you got laid off from biglaw or something, would you put solo on your resume to fill the gap, assuming you did some such work?

Kind of unclear. If your solo work consists of drafting a divorce agreement for your sister, that's not real solo work. If you had paying clients, and resolved some matters for them, en sure, why not?

I think that employers are more likely to hire someone who had some interest in taking the entrepreneurial route, and tried to build a business, than someone who jerked off and poaster on xoxo after being fired at Latham & Watkins.

I really don't know. But it seems like unemployment in and of itself makes you unemployable.

The way I think of unemployment is you likely will have to take something less than what you could have gotten if you were employed. But if you are in a total shit job then you will probably remain unemployed because the step down from shit job is unemployment.

Boomers tend to think that if you've been unemployed longer than a couple months, it means that you get up at 10:30 every morning, eat Cheetos, masturbate, watch Maury, and repeat.

3 months, probably not necessary

around 6 months, a failed solo practice definitely starts to look better than a long stretch of unemployment unless you can cook something else up.

but you can't lie about having a practice. you actually have to start one up and take a few cases through public referral or something. even if you aren't profitable, it at least looks like you were trying to do something and you can spin it as "I tried to go solo, did a lot of hard work, but realized it wasn't for me" ... instead of "I sat around jacking off for six months during which time I was actively looking for work and noone else in this entire godforsaken city wanted to hire me"

up to 6 mos there's no harm in leaving it blank, after that, you'd better have something even if it's not law

i talked to biglaw partners baout this when i moved here, they all pretty much echoed that doing any bullshit job to fill 1 yr gap >>>>>>> gap, because it shows you haven't forgotten how to wake up on time, are responsible, etc.

I'm not attack you, Bro, but this sounds like some Boomer shit they'd pass of as "sage advice" to justify their inability to comprehend the day to day emptiness of having to search for a job ITE.

I thought about doing this for a 5-month gap, then realized that my "solo practice" consisted of (1) drafting a simple will for a college buddy, and (2) volunteering at a legal clinic. For a grand total of 4.5 hours and $100.

If your experience is similar to mine, really wouldn't do this.

they will see right through it and think you are a liar unless you have a good reason as to why you wanted to do solo, what your business plan was, why it didn't work out, etc. you probably will find it hard to get into the details of this kind of thing unless you actually tried to start a solo practice.

Well I wasn't referring to lying about getting laid off or whatever, more just thinking about whether to show that you have been doing some stuff.
